Default 382 All-bore for Road Race application

What are your guys thoughts on this? I've been trying to decide on an engine buildup strategy for open road racing.

I'd like to be in the 400+ RWHP range with a serious eye towards reliability. One thought is an all-bore 382, stage 2 heads, and a cam with a mid-high power range. Hopefully with the extra cubes I could go with a little less lift on the cam and not beat the hell out of the valvetrain.

Thoughts or other ideas?

It's a tough call but I think I would recommend a stroker motor for roadracing. It would get you a huge torque increase in the low and mid RPMs, which is what really matters in roadracing.

Basically a 382 stroker would cost you right around the same price as a 382 Big Bore. The only difference would be that you would be paying for a real strong 4" stroker crankshaft rather than a re-sleeved big bore block.

I recently had ARE build me a 436ci (4.100 bore x 4.125 stroke) and the torque curve is nucking futz!! I can't wait to get this thing out on a few roadcourses this summer.

The 382 stroker has a lot going for it. It is a pretty damn decent price for forged internals with a little extra power.

What type of tracks are you going to be racing on the most? Are you going to use a full racing slick or an R-compound tire? That big fat torque curve of the stroker might have you babying the car out of all 1st gear and maybe even some 2nd gear turns. All things to think about.

I would even consider doing a built 346 with dry sump oiling (cost more, but if you're planning on a lot of fast sweeping turns it may be worth it, and you could definently get 400 rwhp out of it.

I have a 96 Z-28 6M, and after much reseach in my search for Horses I decided (as you said) to go with reliability.
Of course I have an LT-1. I went ahead and purchased a 383 LT-4 longblock with Lunati 4340 Assemblies and cam and AFR heads.
Its pricy to do so but I went ahead and purchased a brand new block. Since I had no away of knowing the condition of my stock block till it was pulled.
To make a long story short, I think you can get as much power N/A as you can Supercharging a stock LT or LS1. And as I mentioned I felt it is much more reliable. Once you upgrade the Fuel Injectors, Fuel pump, Ingition, PCU programing and all the bolt-ons like Headers,cat-back, C.I.A., MAS, Throttle body, etc. A 383 can easily make 500 horse.
I got mine with 9.1:1 Compression and an appropriate cam for later supercharging.
It is a 2 bolt block coverted to a 4 bolt splain caps. ("bullet-proof"). So I should be able to handle a higher PSI blower at a later date.
At that point I think 700-800 Horses is plenty
BTW the engine came from Dallas Exports http://www.strokermotor.com thanks to ROB.
and ran me about $7,000. which isnt all that more than the Vortech-LS1-aftercooled supercharger plus labor. And much less likley to eat a stock piston.
Honestly I dont know that the do brand new LS1 blocks. But if you can somehow get your engine to Texas I promise you they are the most friendly people and tech service I found in my seach for a 383.
I hope this helps.

personnaly, id take a week off work, drive to houston, lay 10k on the table and walk away with a 450rwp WARRANTIED 382cid All-Aluminum small block. i does still make 400+++rwtq. and you can rag the **** out of it every weekend for 24000 miles or 2 years (i think). whats to think about? all-stroke motors suck.

I do not see why you could not use a 382 all bore for road racing.. Some mentioned too much torque, but I see guys with superchargers out there making way more power.. To me the more the power the better... The driver needs to be able to control it..

Seems to me an all bore would work fine. Since you can probably spin to 6800, just gear it to use the power band.
