Re: Lets talk about oil
What weight do you run?
Amsoil 5W-30
What climate are you in?
Central VA (Cold Winters, Hot Summers)
How often do you change it?
5000-7500 miles
Do you use a power adder?
NO
What filter are you using?
STD Size Amsoil
I have my oil sampled and processed for TBN and metals and have been told 7500 miles is no problem. Amsoil Rocks!!

I run 0-30 in my car year round, 5-30 in the wife's tahoe (5.3). Involved with a circle track team that switched over to AMSOIL a couple seasons ago and their over heating problems went away immediatly and they went from changing oil after every race to only changing a couple times a seaon based on analysis results.

Re: Lets talk about oil
changed oil @ 600 miles with castrol GTX, used penske filter (all others were sold out)
changing again at 1800 with GTX (i bought a case) and ac delco filter
Next change will use royal purple with M1 filter.
Should i switch over to 10w for the summer? Why would gm reccomend 5w for the lt1 & ls1's if it wasnt the oil of choice? How much hp are we talking about between the two? And if you abuse your oil (race it alot) is the 10 weight better in the long run? Or is racing with the 5 okay?

10w-30
Mobile 1 Synthetic
Mobile 1 Filter (PN 107)
I change it often enough to remember the Filter part number (whenever I get bored ~2500-3000)
Just recently switched to Mobile 1 from Valvoline. Mobile 1 has a better bottle for pouring and was cheaper.
I'd rather spend the couple extra bucks on synthetic than find out that I wasn't wasting my money.

Re: Lets talk about oil
I've been a faithful Mobil 1 user for a many years now (started using it as far back as 1988!) but recently I've been getting more and more info showing that it's not as good as it used to be. A recent oil analysis report from someone on the f-body list showed their Valvoline synthetic held up much better than Mobil 1, even though they went twice as long on the Valvoline. And Valvoline's SL rated 10w30 has a flash point of 482F, versus new SL rated Mobil 1 which is 455F (down from 478F for the SJ rated Mobil 1) So it appears Mobil 1 is indeed getting worse now.
Time for the Patman to switch to Valvoline!

What weight do you run? Mobil 1 Tri-Synth 5w-30, now considering going to 10w-30
What climate are you in? Warm "Southern VA"
How often do you change it? Every 3000 miles, oil & filter. But now I'm considering 5000 miles like some others have listed.
Do you use a power adder? Nope
If you have a built motor, how many quarts do you use? stock motor 5.5 qts
What filter are you using (1/2 quart or full quart)? 1/2 quart Mobil-1

Here is the link for the archives of the 4th gen mailing list, where you can find that email about the oil analysis results of Valvoline vs Mobil 1:

Re: Lets talk about oil
Weight: started with 5w30 M1 when the car was new. Went to dino 10w40 when I did heads/cam and switched to RP 5w30 last change. Will probably go with RP 10W40 when next change.
Climate: Chicago, hot in summer, cold in winter but I don't drive it much in the winter anymore.
Change interval: Usually 2500-3000 miles. I'll change the RP soon (had it about 3 months now) and see how it looks. I can probably get 5000 out of it though.
No power adder, no plans for one either.
I've been running 6 qts for about 2 years.
I use the M1-107 filter.
Since I did heads/cam I haven't noticed hardly any consumption.

Re: Lets talk about oil
How many of you get your oil analyzed? I'd do it but there aren't any places up here that do it (at least not for anything other than large companies) and it's too expensive to send it over the border. The best way to figure out which oils are good are to get them analyzed to see how they are holding up. It'll also give you a good idea if you're changing your oil at the correct interval or not. If an oil analysis told you that your 3000 mile oil was still 99% as good as new, wouldn't you want to extend your intervals?

Re: Lets talk about oil
I don't know if Blackstone labs will do analysis for Canadian customers but I'm gonna find out, as when I get home I'm gonna email them for their oil analysis kit.

Re: Lets talk about oil
Mobil 1 5W30 for the first 2 oil changes...was eating a ton of oil. Switched to 10w30 and the oil consumption slowed down...got new piston rings and it fixed the problem.
I still run 10W-30 Mobil 1.
Using 5.5 qts.
Change it every 3000 miles
Climate is the oven (desert southwest)...my car sees many days above 110 degrees...DAMN BLACK PAINT AND BLACK INTERIOR!!
Using the K&N hi performance filter.
