Default '02 Burning Oil Bad!

I have a '02 Z28 w/ about 4000 miles on it, it has had bad piston slap in my opinion since the day I got it, it is real bad when I first start it, but the dealer says it is normal, also, I put my MAC header and OYP on at about 1500 miles, and since then everytime I go to WOT everyone tells me it blows smoke out the tailpipes, and I can smell it burning oil after a hard run. I t burns about 1 quart of oil every 2000-3000 miles, and the dealer says its normal. Is this crazy or for real. I am scared to put heads and cam on the car if the motor is going to go anyway already. Pleae give me any advice you can. I ran 5w-30 Mobil 1 syn. at first but I was told that10w-30 is a little better so I switched on the second oil change.

If you removed your cats its normal to see some smoke and to smell fumes. I certainly dont consider your oil consumption to be excessive! I wouldnt worry, and enjoy your car!!

I think GM considers 1 quart per 2,000 miles normal oil consupmtion. The pre 2001 models tend to burn a little more oil. They revised the piston rings late 2001/early 2002 model year to help with the "flutter" condition which tends to burn more oil, i.e. running at light throttle at higher rpms. My car burns about 1.5 quarts per 3,000 miles, which I don't like, but live with. Don't let gm tell you that excessive engine knock is normal. I think there is a poll going on at ls1.com of all the people that have engine knock and they are going to try to get gm to recall the motors, or replace them.

Thanx for the advice I hope I can learn more about this engine knock, it is not so much that it is excessive, it just sure is loud for a while, I just imagined my car to be quite under the hood and hit hard at the pipes, and this knock is just killing my whole love for my brand new car, it's just annoying. thanx, for the help.

I also have an '02 Z28. I have about 1300 miles on it right now. I don't seem to be burning much oil, but I do have what I think and have been told is the piston slap problem. I bought my car about a month ago and I was sure that by now the problem would have been addressed by GM. I guess I was wrong. I am like 35th Z, it is just down right annoying, whether it causes damage or not. I know the engines are noisy any way when they have no problems, but this just add to the racket and my car sounds like a diesel until it is warmed up. I will get mine fixed no matter what I have to do. If the block has to be bored and have the pistons fit by hand then so be it.

Just writing to let you know that not all '02s are having the problems you are. I've got 13500 miles on mine (yes, 13,500 miles in 6 months). Mine burns, at most, an 1/8th (one notch on the dipstick) of a quart of oil per 3000 miles. I have a little noise on start up, but it sounds more like the lifters clacking. Most of my miles were highway miles, but car has been road/drag raced a couple of times now, and I certainly show it no mercy once it's all warmed up.

Well, I think ANY oil use on a NEW CAR is NOT normal. Piston slap, NOT normal. Who is GM kidding? Mine has both. Just my .02

I have a 01Z and My piston slap or engine knock seems to get louder with the more miles i put on it. I've already have to replace a syncro in 5th gear from 1-2000 miles and now the car has 13000 miles on it. How would this go about getting dealt with? Just get a dealer to look at it....Then it'll be out of commission for 2 weeks or more again....I would like answers also....But it does'nt comsume oil that i've noticed....I dunno just in the dark ....

Don't let anyone tell you "piston slap is normal". If the piston is wobbling up and down in the cylinder to make an audible noise outside the engine, it is only a matter of time until failure. My brand new 1000 mile TA has piston slap and it is down right embarrassing to show anyone my new car. My '97 LT1 formula was a sweetheart compared to this piece!

Man, I am getting tired of this crap. I now know two people with LS1's here in town that have had to get GM to rebuild new motors. Now I read this about you people.
2000 Trans Am-Massive oil consumption was rebuilt by chevy dealer. This was friend of mine that had the car for about 3 months, it was brand new.
2001 Camaro Z28-20,000 miles It had massive piston slap. They rebuilt that one as well.
Take them to chevy and threaten to sue, worked for my buddy with the Camaro. Dont let them pull that piston slap is normal crap. There is nothing normal about piston slap. Take it to the dealer, and tell them you have notified your attorney.

Mine is out of the 36k mile waranty now being its at 40k miles. Mine has a knock that is pretty anoying that just started. Oil pressure is good, no smoke out the tail pipe and oil consumption is not a mesurable amount. Car runs real smooth. I'm going to take the oil pan off and check my rod bearings. I've taking my car to dealer ships in the past an no one seems to know what they are doing on an LS1. They just feed you a line of crap instead. I'm looking up prices on building a 7.0 liter for it. Something I did not plan to do until at least reaching 100k miles.

LT1s aren't perfect either Andy. A lot of LT1s suffer from cold knock as well, it's very common. And they may not burn oil for the most part, but they do leak a lot of oil, as you probably know mostly from the intake, but also from a few other places too.

My '97 LT1 had just as much if not more cold piston slap then my '99 Ls1. They both had it from day one and I put 79,000 hard miles on the LT1 before trading it for the '99 Ls1 which now has 72,000 miles and at least 30 bottles of N2O ran through it.

I agree with LastTA02,

I think the LS1's are sweet. They put out a bit more power than the LT1's. But for now Im sticking with the LT1 cars. I put 75,000 miles on my 96 Z before I got a new 383 LT4 longblock.
And the orginal LT1 never had a slap, knock or unusal noise.Always started right up (besides a faulty Hypertech module once)
Never burned any oil or any fluid what so ever that I could notice. I like the new camaros alot, but for now Im sticking to my 96 Z28 fully loaded. I already got too much $$$ into it.
Alot of suspension work,BEAR brakes. 383 LT4,new paint job,etc.
Other than a few Cigarette burns, It looks new, and runs-handles awsome.
