Default Other than a slight hp increase, why mill the heads?

My home ported heads are done! Now I'm trying to decide whether or not to mill the heads .030" They are perfectly flat, so the only reason to mill them would be for increased compression. So what other benefits are there, other than a slight hp increase, to higher compression...i.e 10.6:1? Also, has anyone experienced much more spark knock with a slight bump in compression? Thanks

Hey Brad, I would defintely mill them 30 thousandths as long as you have access to 93 octane all the time. Compression is free hp/tq as long as you can control detonation.

Thanks Jason

Yeah, see the detonation is what I'm afraid of. My car pings with ported maf ends on in the summer on 93. I suppose with a cam, it will richen up the mix a little and help fight detonation. I heard that it helps throttle response a little also.

Brad, how much work did you do in the chambers? If you unshrouded the valves some or polished the chambers, you more than likely took out a few CCs of material out. I would mill at least 15 thous. to make up for any "lost" compression that way.

Also, try running with and w/o the ported ends. My car would ping horribly w/ a stock motor and the hpp3 tuning/stock maf. However, when I installed the old B1 way back when, the car really responded well to it. The cam does change things up quite a bit.

Like Jason said:
as long as you have proper octane. Im in california and the highest octane we have readily availabe is 91 octane. I would be hesitant to have an 11:0-11:1 on straight 91 octane. you seem like your good to go.

Do you have any pics of your heads?

I just dropped my home ported heads off at the machine shop this morning. I am going to have them take of .030 and then cc the chambers to see where I am at. I have the 6.0L heads though.
