I'd still be leery of using it though, as a race oil is going to be formulated differently in the other areas as well (different levels of antioxidants, antifoaming agents, etc.) I couldn't find the specs on the RP race oil on their site, do you know where I can find them? I have always been told by a lot of different people that their race oils contain a low amount of detergents, so finding out the TBN of that oil will help me determine if that info is false or not. Because of the other reasons listed above though, I still wouldn't recommend a race oil for street use, especially not for longer oil change intervals (which really is one of the big reasons to go synthetic in the first place)

Re: Very interesting info about Royal Purple
The fellow who first turned me on to RP was an additive formulation engineer for Texaco. He told me the TBN for this oil was 11 . I too could not find the specs on their website but I took his unbiased opinion at face value and have been using it ever since. He was the one who bought my 94 Viper (the 1 before the 98) and guess what he puts in that?? Mobil 1 Delvac. That's right! A diesel oil in a Viper. His opinion is that you get a much better additive package in a diesel oil than in a regular motor oil. He has converted many Viper owners to use of Delvac

Re: Very interesting info about Royal Purple
A TBN of 11 is very impressive! I guess my sources were wrong about the detergent package on that oil. Like I said though, I'd still be careful because of it's other properties.
I do know about the Delvac oil, it's a little secret oil that nobody knows much about, but it's extremely impressive. It's Mobil's best oil. It's hard to find though, and very very expensive. Most people get it at truck stops, but I have seen it at Walmart up here. It's $36 CDN for a 4 quart jug though, compared to $25 for a 5 quart jug of the regular Mobil 1.

"guess my sources were wrong"
So much for all your research. Sounds like it's BS from typical sit on your *** at home oil experts. Since you didn't know RP's TBN value, I doubt you know much about any other of its "properties" to be a credible authority. You should stick to being a digital image retoucher.

Just because I didn't know RPs TBN doesn't mean I haven't been doing a lot of research. Forgive me for not knowing every friggen number on every oil ever made buddy! I've probably forgotten more about oil than you know, so just keep your mouth shut.

Re: Very interesting info about Royal Purple
So what the hell is your point? Because I didn't know RP's TBN that means I don't know anything about oil? Get real. Whatever.

Re: Very interesting info about Royal Purple
I,for one, thank Patman for bringing up this subject on "oils" .I use Valoline Syntec 10w-30w,but open to switching to a better "street" oil for my 11 sec. ride.

My message is a contribution as it points out how someone is proven not to be as well informed as he would lead us to believe, and this posting misleading information.

Hardly. I stand by the fact that a race oil is not suitable for street use, it does not contain the right additive package.
By the way, why don't you give us your opinions here since you're such a big expert all of a sudden.

Re: Very interesting info about Royal Purple
Isnt Royal Purple purple? That alone should be the reason to use it, its cool. Especially with clear valve covers.

Re: Very interesting info about Royal Purple
It has a purplish tint but is dark and looks like used oil when new! I have used #41 for 3000 mile intervals with great results but I am anxious to try the AMSOIL 15W40 I mentioned. It has great specs.

I never claimed to be an expert and I don't shoot my mouth off on a topic in which I'm not knowledgeable. Your own admissions as I pointed to in my first message in this post demonstrates that neither you or your sources are well informed.

Dirty oil will dyno less than clean oil, so it's easy to show a gain just by changing oil.
The real test would be to dyno new fresh Mobile 1 5w-30, drain it pour in RP and dyno again. Then 3000 miles later dyno the RP again and see if it showed the same gains at 3000 miles as it did at 0 miles.
