I bet at 108 LSA that would idle like a mother-******.

Would a revers split cam be benificial for a 5,3 tow motor?
I want very high Tq from 1000 to 2500 rpm and peak Tq at 3000-3500 rpm.

With the proper valve events, and good exhaust, YES

In this case, what would constitute a good exhaust?
(got a cat back, nothing more is planned)

Who would be qualified (not guessing) to spec out a reverse split tow cam like mentioned above? I would think that not many people has actually any experience with a reverse split Gen III 21x-20x .5xx / .5xx 110 lsa cam?
If I am wrong, all the better!

Good exhaust would be a good set of long tube headers going into an off-road Y-pipe. I've read that that's the best for a 5.3 instead of duals. Add a cutout and you're in there.

So would a small reverse split cam be a good one for a pickup like my Sierra? Not looking for much low end sacrifice since it will tow at times. Just more power throughout the powerband.

Dont get too caught up in a degree here or a degree there. There are often variances of a couple of degrees on a custom grind. You may end up needing to advance, retard the cam slightly to get it where you want.

How would a reverse split cam work on good flowing heads? Are these cams basically for restrictive intakes? Ive heard of someone on here going with the TR230, trickflows, and FAST 90/90 and putting out around 450 rwhp. What about compression? Do they like high compression or somewhere around stock.

This cam is perfect in my book, great drivibility, and made nice power, it made 394rwhp. This cam will also work great with my future mods, some TEA Stage 1.5 5.3L heads, and Fast 90/90 set up.
Larry suggested the same for me. 383rwhp 358rwtq. I have a catted Y and the stock catback too. For now. Drives about like stock, until I stand on it. [IMG][/IMG]

Well now I can add to this:

I was pulling my Z from track duty for this year and I was tired of lope and rough idle, burning eyes etc...
But I wanted to keep as much power, make it Stealthy and keep the 12:1 SCR on my 370.

Guess what I did?

I stuffed it with a 224/222 .609/.581 117 LSA (XFI/XE-R) custom grind (The SS Cam) and I was ammazed at the results.
More trq than with the bigger cam and only lost 12 rwhp.
I will make a thread and post a dynograph once it is fully fine tuned.

So here are a couple cams I have been thinking about running in my set up:

XFI based 236/230 106/106
XFI based 236/230 106/108

IVC @ .050 is 44*
Both have 8.57 DCR based on my setup (see link bellow for set up as I plan on doing a cam shoot out).
As far as PV it's as good or better than a TREX with both intake and exhaust so it might work in a stock shortblock/head combo:
IVO Points:
______TREX__Custom
.006__37.4____37
.050__13.5____12
.200_(-26.2)___(-26.5) * These are ATDC

EVC Points:
______TREX__Custom
.006__39.8____30
.050__13.2____5
.200_(-27.4)___(-33) *these are BTDC

The thing I like about the first cam is it's EVO of 41 @ .050 but a little concerned about the 21* of overlap
The Second cam has a later EVO of 45* @ .050 but has 17* overlap

Another Idea I had was the same Cam but a 107/107
This moves the IVC to 45* and the EVO to 42* moves overlap to 19* and the PV clearence is even better on the intake and still better than the TREX. It does drop DCR a little bit to 8.50

BTW, this is going in my 63 P/U that weighs about 4,200lbs so low rpm TQ is wanted as well as some serious top end pull.

Cam shoot out thread: https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/783007-cam-shoot-out-who-wants-see-5-cams-back-back-testing.html

Suggestions, thoughts welcome.

I have been comparing every dyno graph you guys have posted to the one i have of my MS3. And so far on paper my car is getting circles run around it. Then again i don't have all the mods to make the big cam worth it, such as the gears, ls6 intake, heads, etc. If this thread would have existed prior to my MS3 purchase i would have had a reverse split cam. I have raced a few cars from a first gear roll, and my car doesn't seem impressive till i get to the higher rpms. Yes gears would definetly change that, but when i compare a reverse split graph to mine, the MS3 looks like it has no power down low compared to one of the reverse split. I think every new member should read this thread before they jump on the peak HP wagon like many of us have done.

from everything i have read and all, it seems like the reverse splits make better under the curve for a DD street car!! but im curious, how lets say the X1 or TR 230/224 would do vs. the bigger cams from a roll? because they would kick the bigger cams *** under the curve, will they be hanging right there with the big cams or would they just get walked?

That's no secret. The MS3 is a top-end only cam. The valve events show that, as do the experiences on the board. It's great if you have the gears to keep it in the upper RPMs, but otherwise it's not much.

Well this is where I variate on the grinds, I retard me reverse cams to achieve a better carry after peak, instead of having it fall on their faces shortly after. (Make it more intake biased from TDC)
So instead of advancing I retard and I keep the split very tight, usualy no more than 2* (like 224/222, or 230/228 etc...)

Trust me i know what i was getting myself into when i got the MS3, i was planning on spraying on top of it. But now i feel like heading in the all motor direction, so basically no spray and no gears makes this cam a dog. Don't get me wrong it is fun when it gets up in that RPM range, but when i see graphs of other cams mine looks like it can't hang. Either way this is a very informative thread, and will stay checking it out.
