Default 228/228 XE-R too big for me?

I am thinking about the 228 XE-R cam in my car. Question is, I have no way to get the thing tuned with LS1 edit (I live in North Dakota). Will my car idle and run ok without any tuning? My car is basically stock, with a M6 and 4.10's. Also, can I use 918 springs with this cam ?

LS1_Edit is portable. Anybody can order it to use anywhere. Even ND.

That is an awfully *large* cam to try to get by w/out tuning. The 918's are good up to .600 (me not knowing what the lift #'s are for that cam...)

I agree.. Tuning would be needed.. If you get tuning the cam would be awesome.. 918's might not be enough.. Try 987's...

I have the Comp 224 XE-R on a 114 LSA on stock 98 tuning with a 6 speed and it runs perfectly fine. I feel like i'm probably loosing about 25hp with it, but it runs and idles fine. Try to round a couple buddies up with LS1's and go in together and get LS1 Edit.

Hehehee, sorry man, but there are few to no LS1 anythings in ND. You forget, that it is winter here for 8 months of the year !! :/ Anyway, we know the 224 XE-R works good with stock programing on a M6 car. But what about the 226 or the 228? Anyone out there have this cam with a basically stock car and no tuning?

I do plan to add longtubes at some time, and maybe even have it tuned in NC when I go back to visit, but I want something that will work for now, as it could be awhile before i get the tuning or headers.

The cam that I chose is a 226 XE-R.. You have the gearing to run whatever cam you chose. Its the rest of your setup that is going to determine your power output.

Thanks for the quick reply Vince, what exactly is your setup, and how did your car run without tuning?

That's a pretty big cam for stock tuning, but I think it could work. I'd definitely check piston-to-valve clearance w/ .588" lift and that much duration. The 918's are said to be good up to .600" lift, so you could try it out. I'm running the 224 XE-R w/ .581" lift with 918's with no problems thus far (knock on wood). You might need to raise your idle some, but you could just crack your TB blade open some or drill it out. Expect to have your SES light on w/ out tuning, though. I'm thinking you'll get a few misfires with that cam. My only other worry would be your a/f ratio. Do you have AutoTap?

No Trevor, I dont have AutoTap, and I dont know anyone that does. Do you think I should stick with the 224 XE-R? How much difference can there really be in the two cams with a difference of only 2 duration? I want to go as big as I can incase I decide to do headers and porting later.

Buy ATAP and Edit. you'll want to be able to check and clear codes and play with your tuning as you continue to mod the car.

I'd be a little concerned about using the 918 springs with the 228 lobes. Getting pretty close to the edge.

What the hell is wrong with you? There is no such thing as to big of a cam only not enough motor. Honestly though I would go with it and have your pcm sent off and get everything that needs to be done for the cam put on it idle etc..

What kind of shift RPM would I have with the 226 or the 228 XE-R ?

Sorry, my car is being put together right now. The only tuning I have is cam only tuning from my T1 cam. My shortblock is going to be forged 346ci balanced and blueprinted. Personally, tuning is a must. I want to squeeze every little bit out of this setup.
