Default How is this labor cost for cam/.etc install?

A shop quoted me $4500 for a cam, TPIS headers, 2001 intake manifold all installed. It included chromemoly pushrods, comp 918 springs, titanium retainers, Katech oil pump, Hutton timing chain with cloyes gears, and dyno tuning with LS1Edit. I could probably save almost a grand if I didn't get dyno tuning, oil pump, hutton timing chain, and the titanium retainers, I suppose. They didn't list the items seperately, just a big lump sum They don't appear to be a sponsor here, so I don't know if I should say the name of the shop?

This is on a C5, BTW. I guess installation and LT header prices are the only possible differences between F and Y body for this job.

The odd thing is, both shops I talked to (the other was Agostino) wanted 5 days to do the install and tuning. I was kind of hoping it'd take 2 days or at most 3. The 5 day install combined with the 6 hour drive time to Toronto each way is the reason I'm not going with ARE. I don't really want to do that two weekends in a row, with my girlfriend driving her car so we can leave the vette there, and then pick it up again. Plus if something went wrong with the car it'd be better to have the place close by.

Thanks,
Miles

Let's see, Headers around $400-500 to install (requires welding)
Intake, should require no more that $100 (I can them in 35 min flat)
I believe MTI charges $450 for a cam install on a C5 and that would include your timing chain and timing gears which I HIGHLY suggest you get the JWIS version instead.
Oil pump should be an extra 30 min to 45 min so $100 max there.
LS1Edit tuning is around $550 max
So assuming max cost of $1700 to install that leaves $4500 - $1700 = $2800 in parts?
Cam kit from TR, includes everything, gaskets, p-rods, springs, retainers, etc, $800
Katech pump $110
Timing chain and gears $250
Manifold $400
Headers $850
Total of $2410 in parts so we're around $390 shy somewhere, I'm guessing from their labor.

Get a detailed list of what it costs to install what. And they SHOULD not charge to install timing chain and gears in cam swap b/c it has to be put back on anway.

A friend of mine got a camshaft package, longtube headers, and an underdrive pulley all done, parts and labor at MTI for $2400'ish I beleive on his C5. Thats *not* with their recent group purchase pricing, thats normal standard pricing and I assume includes PCM modification.

$4500 is by far a shop taking your arsehole and seeing how far they can shove their foot up it...unless of course they never work on LS1 cars and are going all by book time quote (and in that case I'd just let somebody else do the work if possible).

pushrods 800***
cam install 800
tuning 500
custom dual
timing chain 200
oil pump 170
intake manifold
and install 550
TTS headers 1200
header install 200
-------------------
Total 4420

The TTS headers are about $300 more than TPIS. With TPIS, I guess the total would be ~$4100.

***I asked about the heads/cam package at the same time as cam only, and they inadvertantly left out the price for the cam/pushrods/springs without heads. With their "street eliminator" heads, the price for heads/cam/springs/pushrods/retainers was $1600 (but steel retainers, not TI). I estimated the price of cam, springs, pushrods, and titanium retainers without heads as about $800. The rest of the prices are a direct quote. The install cost for heads/cam was $1500 instead of $800 for cam only, so total for street eliminator heads and cam etc. was $5970.

Miles, I think you could do A LOT better than what these guys are quoting you. PS, WhitneyR on the CorvetteForum has a nearly NEW set of TTS headers for sale, $925 shipped (about 1000 miles on them) and they were professionally installed by the VetteDoctors in Amityville, Ny. They are perfect. Here's his email: WhitneyR@kizan.com tell him I sent you

$800 to install a cam, good god!

Do the work yourself. It is not hard at all. Just do some research and take your time.
You will save a load of cash.

You can get a C5R JWIS chain from Katech that uses the stock gear. I've not heard of anyone breaking one yet.
