Default MTI C2 cam & Stg 1 heads - 420 hp 397 tq

Hi guys,

Just picked up my car at MTI after install of C2 cam on their cam special. The previous cam was a lunati 221/221 .558/.558 116 lsa and this cam made 419 hp 387 tq peak numbers back in Jan. 2002 after an Ls6 intake install & Ls1edit tuning.

C2 cam is 224/224 .581/.581 112 lsa. New peak dyno numbers are 420.5 hp(6000 rpm) 397.5 tq (4800 rpm). The big gain was down in the mid-range and low rpms. I don't have the resources to post the dyno sheet, so here are the numbers read off it(SAE corrected).

old hp/tq new hp/tq gain
2700 rpm - (170/328 - 175/338)+5hp/+10tq
3000 rpm - (191/336 - 206/358)+15hp/+22tq
3300 rpm - (219/350 - 238/379)+19hp/+29tq
3500 rpm - (239/356 - 255/380)+16hp/+24tq
4000 rpm - (285/372 - 300/392)+15hp/+20tq
4500 rpm - (325/379 - 338/392)+13hp/+13tq
5000 rpm - (365/385 - 375/393)+10hp/+8tq
5500 rpm - (391/373 - 406/387)+15hp/+14tq
6000 rpm - (413/361 - 420/366)+7hp/+5tq
6500 rpm - (410/330 - 412/332)+2hp/+2tq

The Stage 1 heads seem to be maxed out on the top end, but picked up a lot of power where I drive the car most of the time. The torque curve stays above 350 ft.lbs. from 2800 to 6250 rpm, a very fat torque curve now.

The car drives great, no surging at idle, very streetable cam. I had the SLP dual/dual installed also and lope is almost unnoticeable. Only a slight bit of stick shake also, not enough to be bothersome. This cam is awesome!!!

MTI determined right away that my stock lifters were shot, and these were replaced during the cam install. So I got a nice gain and probably averted some future engine damage by doing this cam swap.

Tony, can you post the dyno graph, I'll be at QQ tonite.

I saw your B1 after Paul pulled it out, that thing was worn out! Good thing you swapped cams when you did.

Man, MTI's stage I setup sure has come a long way! Does anyone remember the summer of '99 when Jason 98 TA had the "aggressive" heads/cam setup that made 396 RWHP? They put the big cam in it: 221/221, .558"/.558", 116 LSA. That was the biggest cam MTI had for heads/cam setup at that point, and their stage I heads were all they had. Damn, LS1's sure have progressed!

How did they know your lifters were shot?

Yeah Justin, Ive had that cam in since Oct. 99 and have put 25,000 miles as well as 150+ track passes. It was definately time to upgrade!

Other pertinents facts to go along with the dyno numbers: rear end is stock 10-bolt w/3.73s, stock driveshaft, 16x8 chrome wheels with 245/50/16 nittos. Only possible dyno trick would be the McLeod Dual Disk has an aluminum flywheel.

Thanks Tony, see ya later!

NastyC5,

I don't know how they figured it out, but I trust MTI and their mechanics fully. They have been nothing but straight with me about the car since I started doing buisness with MTI in May '99.

The car has 36,000 miles on it now, the last 25,000 miles have been hard ones, so replacing the lifters was probably prudent to guarantee Piston to Valve clearances are not exceeded. Don't need any bent valves right now!!

Yeah, Trevor those were frustrating times for parts back then, but shops like MTI, ARE, etc. had to feel their way around until they got a feel for what would work reliably, nobody knew back then that these engines would produce the power levels we're seeing now. This is some fun ****!!

you might want to take your car to Elite motorsports to have it dynoed , MTI has been known for editing there dyno graphs. They will deny it but MTI and Elite had a dyno day at the same time a while back and guys were making close to 20 rwhp MORE ON mti'S DYNO . The jap dyno at the import shops were right on with Elite's . Many people were upset but I know MTI try s to keep there customers happy . just a heads up
Regards

Thanks, UltraRedZ, but my butt-o-meter so far is backing up the dyno sheet. The car feels a lot faster!!

Besides I can take the car back on June 22nd and re-dyno it on dyno day. I don't think they can doctor anything with me standing right there. The dyno sheet will be posted later, you can look for yourself.

Are those numbers through the dual-dual exhaust or open?

346cubes,

The dyno was with the cut-out open, and with ORPs replacing the cats.

I guess the MTI customers also pay the timeslip lady at HRP to give them slips that back up their dyno figures too, right?

Thanks guys,

I'm pretty happy with the numbers too!! I can easily smoke the Nittos at 2500-3000 rpms on the street with this combo, did that last night.

Yeah, Coach I may try HRP Sat., June 29th, or one of the Fri. street nights in the next couple of weeks.
