Default TR 230 cam check in..

If you are running this newest 230 cam from Thunder Racing, please check in here with your results . I just want to see how they are working out. Thanks!

I'm running it in an A4 w/stock heads.

It idles so that's good. It surges but, it's an A4 w/ a 111 cam. Maybe that's as good as it gets.

As far as power goes, well I think I'm having a powertrain problem because I'm down from 321 to 283

I think the cam should be a nice top-end screamer once it's tuned properly. I think the problems we're seeing with the cam are from poor tuning or unrelated problems. As Ryan said in another thread, a good tune is a LOT more than just an idle and redline.

I'm having major tuning problems. I went from a T1 cam(390 rwhp) to about 365rwhp with the TR230 cam.

Not to rain on anyones parade, but the cams being used here seem to get bigger and bigger on a monthly basis. This has been going on for quite some time now.

Anyone beginning to think that we are at the point of deminishing returns, ie: Starting to maybe "overcam" these engines considering the LS1s displacement and its overall potential in street trim?

There has to be a point where bigger just does not becomes better..... We may be there....

Ron,
only my opinion

I think my probs are powertrain related.

Trevor- Did you loose a front pump once? What were your symptoms. My engine threw a rod, got a new one and now the tranny is howling and shifts are hard. I have a Vig3200, it wasn't doing that before the rod came out. Could the siezed engine blown the pump or TC?

I think my gains have been well documented. I have very nice ported heads by Casey Snider from SAM and some big 1 7/8" Whisper headers. I picked up 7 rwhp over my excellent TR224 112 cam at peak and made 35-50 more rwhp and 6600-6800 rpms. My gains were 2 tenths and 2 mph over my old Lunati 221/224 113 LSA cam. Just gotta turn the motor tighter.

Patrick,
You are a 230/224 reverse split though. I thought some of these guys were running 230/230 cams?

When the trans quit it was all at once. I never had any warning; it just lost every gear while driving down the road. If I were you, I'd give Chuck a call at FLP. He's great with transmissions, and he will be able to help you diagnose any possible transmission problems. (630)820-9294

Maybe I'll upgrade my 229.8 duration cam to a 230 duration.

My numbers were very bad a tune wasn't the problem. The prob was with the TC, I have no idea what was wrong with it but, let's say I found close to 100rwhp when the stocker went back in.

And that is in an A4,LS6intake,ASP pulley,MAC/ORY, stock catback and cutout closed w/ 11inch TTIIs out back with a too lean A/F of 14.5.

The TR230 cam is nice

Speaking of terry, wasnt it you that said that you gained nothing from moving from the 224 to the 230 (229v2.1938) until you changed your timing tables? then gained like 20rw up top?

JC, TUNE.....you never mentioned what you had done to the PCM. take it up to speedworks (or speedtek if they have edit now) and have them work it out.

here's the quote
""JmX, when I first went from the 224 cam to the 229 cam I picked up 0 rwhp on the dyno. I was afraid I had caught JmX syndrome (that is when you swap cams and gain nothing). I then realized that the tuning was completely different (especially the timing curve), and after adjusting the timing curve picked up like 20rwhp on the dyno (and .2ths at the track) over the only slightly smaller 224 cam. Just FYI.""

I have been very happy with the TR230/224 cam in my car. The car picked up an additional 10rwhp up top (vs. TR224/224), with very little to no loss in bottom end. Here is the dyno graph:

TR230/224 111lsa vs. TR224/224 114lsa
