Default Use Cloyes to Advance 4* Grind Cam +2 more to 6* Advanced??

Anyone take a typical 114 4* ground advance Lunati or Comp and advance it another 2* or more with their Cloyes gears to move the power band down a little?

Other than moving the power band, do you give up any peak power or power in general doing this? Any other valve timing issues to keep in mind? Does PTV clearance/timing change?

Just curious on the 2nd questions. Most interested in whether I'll lose any peak power.

Thx

I cant speak on the LS1 since I know very little about advancing and the effect it has on them

2 of my very good friends who race cars professionally have always advanced cams even further than suggested with great results.

I would like to see if it would have an effect on the hp/tq too on an LS1.

Ya, I'm surprised more people haven't done it. The power peak on larger duration 114 cams is too damn high. Advancing past a certain point must give up something or people would be going with more than 4*, right?

What about 4* ground in + another 2* advance using the Cloyes? 6* total??

Here is a little info from my cam install. I installed a Comp 216/220 cam with a cloyes hex-adjust cam sprocket and a jwis chain. When I called the Comp tech line, the guy told me that the LS1 cams only got 2 degrees adv. ground in, but the older SB Chevy cams got 4 degrees adv.
When I degreed my cam, I had to set the hex-adjust to about 3 degrees adv. in order to have an actual 0 to 1 degree advance per the cam spec sheet. I didn't get the car dynoed, and I know that this is a very mild cam. The cam pulls from 1000 rpm just like the stocker but has a little more top end.
Not that this addressed your question but I just wanted to add my .02.

JohnR:
That's great info. Anyone know how much advance Lunati typically grinds in?
Guess I'll wait for my next dyno, decide on my shift points, then advance it as needed.

Does advancing affect PTV clearance? Does advancing as little as 4* create any PTV concerns?

Ahh, found a good thread:

I was thinking of doing the same with my "Hot"cam so I would not have to move the rev limmiter and spin the motor higher and regain some Low end. By lowering the powerband It should be less stress on the valve train.

Does anyone know how much you would Advance the cam to move the peak hp back 500 RPM. Also what would the trade off be?

Thx. From the other thread I read that an Intake Centerline of 110 on a 114 LSA means you have 4* Advance, so looks like I do too.

Still debating advancing another 2* with my Cloyes. Will wait for the next dyno.

JohnR: My Comp Cam came in +4 degrees (advanced) as have my previous 2 Comp.

My "install @ 110" was put in at 109, 'cause it's a total PITA getting that last 1 degree out when degreeing a cam...

Mello: You wanna change the characteristics of the cam? Put some 1.8 rockers in. It's been my experience that it widens & strengthens the cam's low-end capabilities. I'm sure that depends on the cam, though.

Right now, I'm running a 218/224 @ 112 through the 1.8's. Maybe picking up a couple degrees at .050, but at .560+ (lift w 1.8's is .560/.571), I'm probably picking up 10 degrees (or more!). Cam runs waaay strong to the rev limiter at 6800!! And, has enough low-end to not lug at 1500rpms going uphill!
