"Hot" cam users please
I was I getting ready to put in a "Hot" cam and was just wondering what you Hot cam users would say are the Pro's and Con's on your set up's I have seen 345-390 rwhp on a hot cam set up. The 390 only had a G-MAF, Lid and Mac 3/4 length headers!! (01 M6) .
My plans are "Hot" cam and springs, Hardened push rods, TR55 gaped @ .047, Gutted and sleeved cats, O2 sims, ported Tb, Lid Ported MAF ends, in a 01 M6. I will be drilling out the Tb for Idle. Once LS1 edit for 01 has the bugs worked out I will be purchasing it as well for further tuning. I am hoping for 355-365 rwhp without headers I believe it is achievable based on what I have seen a 30+hp gain is common. I would love all your input.
I also need to know what gaskets and miscellaneous parts and specialty tools I might need.

Re: "Hot" cam users please
Well Now I have 330rwhp with a lid, cutout, and free ram air mod. So you’re saying I will loose derivability and loose hp?
A car (99 firehawk) in the Bay area just put 345 rwhp with NO mods. From what I am hearing here is the average hp gain
Gutted cats = 8-17hp
Lid = 5-12hp
Ported TB = 3-5hp
Hot cam =12-30hp
So somewhere between 28-64hp gain
So 330 plus 28= 358
And 330 plus 64= 394 (would need headers bad!!
So realistically does 355-365 sound so absurd? Not being a smart-*** just trying to find out why the Hot cam users on this board are not putting up better numbers? The numbers I put up above are ones I have seen on the dyno therefore I can only estimate the combo. That’s why I am trying to get some real world info.
mgreen,
you dont seem happy with your setup? what was so bad about the idle and drivability? The cars I have been around once it find idle (when cold) it is fine.
Thanks!!

Re: "Hot" cam users please
Just a little frustration: background -> I went 12.7@111.7 mph w/ stock engine w/ lid & catback.
I added the hotcam, but it was soft -> gm replaced the engine. I went 12.6@112.5mph. Maybe my first engine was a ringer??
Anyways, I'd say you can expect 10-20whp on stock manifolds (didn't know what you made pre-hotcam).
Idle and drivability really isn't that bad. I was just frustrated that I went 1mph faster than my stock cam setup. . . but again, I have seen w/ my own 2 eyes how different one set of "stock" heads can be from another, and my previous engine may have been a ringer. . . or this new engine is bbelow the avg. LS1. Of course, after the recent exhaust work, I found a couple loose bolts at the manifolds, and ran low timing at the track w/ the 112 trap speed.
We'll see how I go w/ the headers soon. Feels like 114mph, even in the 90* heat. If I don't go 114 in the heat, or 116 in the cool weather @ 3500lb's raceweight, I will be one unhappy person.

Re: "Hot" cam users please
My life with the Hotcam:
ahem* 371rwhp/377rwtq. Mods: 00Z28M6, MAC/ORY w/flowmaster collector,cutout,lid,MAFT,ported TB
Best 1/4: 12.3@115 w/2.0 60' (8.0@88 1/8)
Best 1/8: 7.8@91 w/ 1.91 60' (could've been a 12.0 or 11.9999999)
Don't let people tell you this cam doesn't work. It does for what it is. It isn't the biggest boy around but it does well. I whipped T1 cammed cars with it.
Why you don't have headers, I'll never know but, expect around 355rwhp with your very poor exhaust system. Gutted cats? no,no,no
mgreen- I thought my Hotcam wasn't making power( 110mph b4 111 after) till I quit shifting at 6100 and took it to 6500(111 b4 115.6 after)

Re: "Hot" cam users please
JC,
Why do you say no, no on gutted cats? There have been a few busts were a "visual" under hood inspection has got some friends in trouble with headers and no cats, Therefor I am already playing with fire so I am trying to "look" as stock as possible. I might try those crappy Elderbrock's because of the carb. Number.
But for now I will just “sleeve a set of cats and see how they work. Along with an off road y-pipe and cutout. A true-dual with just Car-Tec two disk baffles is also a thought.
I know the cam works I seen it put a car to low 12.1's with headers, lid ported, TB and just a FEW minor tricks. Black Magic Racing and Hot rod heaven have had a few Hot cam cars do very well!
In the 390+ range

Re: "Hot" cam users please
i dynoed 365 through a 12 bolt with 4.10 gears. that typically takes up 15 RWHP - which would put me at 380 - but this is with LS1 edit time too. i put down 365 with the stock PCM and rearend too. my best time was only the first time i ever ran it and i got a 12.4 at only 110.7 shifting way early as to not hit the rev limitor. that was around 5500.
the idle got old and the power was decent but not specatuler. if i were to go with bigger springs and pushrods, i would DEFINATELY go with a B1/TR224 type cam.

Re: "Hot" cam users please
Ditto the TR224! I am very happy with this set-up for power w/ driveability and smooth idle lope.
I have seen good results with the B1 also. Just flip a coin you can't lose.

2K1SS-
I see you're in Cali. So emmissions is a great concern for you. I was just implying a 3 three inch off road Y would be better.
If you're on a budget, get the hotcam. If you got the skrilla for the TR224 or TR230 then definately bypass the hotcam.

Hotcam.. Its just right for me..
hotcam+lid+catback 330/330
added the slp kit ( headers + cats + y-pipe )
351/364
best 1/8th 8.7 with 2.3 60' ( I have a whimp launch ).
put in car with 4200 miles.. I have 18000 with
no problems.. w / 23 passes + several street
runs..
some emissions testing

Re: "Hot" cam users please
JC,
The car is lowerd 2.75" and cant fit a 3" y-pipe in it or it would be done. Also I will only be out $478 for the Hot cam kit, Gaskets, Push rods, New plugs and Oil and filter. $528 with gutted cats and 02 sims. Realy hard to beat that price
So what the hell
The next mods are going to be a clutch and Tq arm.
HOSS99,
My car WILL pass in 2006 but not with the Hot cam. Although I have heard of people passing by rasing the desired Idle and shortining the Injector pulse width, But i'm not going to try.
I just heard a car with my setup last night and it sounded SWEET!!

Just a little birdy
What's up Rick?
I was speeking to dave about a hot cam setup and he mentioned that you put the cam in your car and was verry happy. By the way what were your numbers before?
