How much additional work is it to install the timing chain when doing a Cam install? Someone had told me that you really have to pull the engine to do this... Which just sounds wrong to me, but I wanted to see if anybody could tell me from experience, what additional work is necessary?

Replacing the POS stock timing chain is well worth the effort. Yes, the oil pump has to come off in order to get the crank sprocket off, but you can easily do it without pulling the engine. I had to lower the oil pan in order to get to the single bolt that holds the oil pickup tube on. I suggest that you stuff a clean rag in the oil pan opening to avoid loosing small parts. It sounds worse than it really is. I think the hard part was getting the oil pump back onto the crank; it just takes patience. Make sure ALL of the oil pan bolts get screwed back in tight. The nice thing about working on the LS1 is that the gaskets are all the o-ring style and don't require scraping and gasket cement.
Have fun,

Is there any modification required to the pickup tube for the double-roller (due to the shimming of the oil pump)? Seems like I remember hearing something about this early on with the Rollmaster...

I just finished installing the SLP double roller in my 98Z yesterday. It wasn't that bad, just time consuming. JohnR pretty much explains it all. The only thing else I would add in to use a small paper clip to wrap around the threads so you can hold on to it. Just use a pair of needle nose to make the loop. This really makes the installation easier.

Does the timing chain come with timing gears???
If so, what do they sound like/how loud are they?
Thanks,
TJ

So are you saying that you didn't have to do anything special with the pickup tube? Its just like installing the stock timing chain except for the oil pump shims? (I've only dealt with the standard "single row" chain).
Here's a couple links BTW: http://www.slponline.com/view_produc...RTNUMBER=55000

Nothing special at all. It's tight but does fit. It's like the stock chain but twice as wide. You will need a puller to get the stock gear off the crank as well as the harmonic balancer.

I am on the same boat trying to decide which one to get.
I guess I am going to go with the double roller
