After working at Sunoco in their pipeline/R&D devision as a chemist for two years, these posts make me laugh sometimes.

To the guy who got pissed off from them adding ethanol to bring up the octane, guess what, its nation wide now and actually safer than the previous alternative, MTBE.

Companies don't water down their gas either. Fact is, some refineries have problems / lower standards when it comes to drying the gasoline after cracking it. All distilates must pass a visual inspection for haze (water content) but some companies have internal standards for total PPM of water in the gasoline. This "off-spec" product then gets sold at a cheaper rate to places like WaWa and Raceway, i.e. distributors that don't own any refineries and buy 100% of their product on the open market.

My advice, get to know your local gas station dealer. Find out when he gets deliveries and try and buy your gas approx. 24 hours after they receive a delivery. Reason for this is if you buy it too soon, you get all the spooge that gets stirred up, buy it right before the next delivery and you could get this same spooge and a lower octane rating.

As for me I get Amoco 93 and I know exactly what I am getting...Working for them kinda helps. The only Amoco station in Houston

I'm aware that gas gets sourced out to different brands-that's no secret. Although I'm not sure if that applies to Amoco, but may well be.
Like was pointed out, and I've seen this many times, the chance of getting crappy gas are greater at the lowball stations, and the ones that don't do enough business to keep a regular fresh supply.
I filled w/Shell this morning, but just as well may be BP next time. I'm not particularly brand loyal anymore.

Amoco 93 or Chevron 93 only here.

Make sure your station uses separate hoses for seperate grades so you don't get the last guys 89 Octane junk.
