Default Im new at and need help with storing my car...

-moderators feel free to move this i didnt know where to put it
I live in Florida so I have never really had to store my car for anything such as winter. But im about to go away for the summer for about six weeks! I can store it (another words, keep it untouched in my garage) or have a neighbor tear it apart, or i mean, start/drive it. What would you choose?
So for SIX weeks what do i have to do to avoid any problems that arise from storing a car? ?

For six weeks you don't need to do anything elaborate. Just drive it on a good long trip to heat up the oil and burn off moisture, then top off the tank and park the car. No need to start the engine during that time, and do you really want your neighbor driving it anyways??

So just let it sit for 6 weeks with a full tank?...and whats the full tank for again? i remember reading about this

The full tank helps keep moisture out of the gas tank. You may want to disconnect the battery just in case you have some sort of current draw. Once they are dead i dont think they are reliable anymore imo.

I agree with mjf454 regarding the battery. I'd either disconnect it or get an automatic charger on it. This is good insurance for your battery (and alternator at startup). Six weeks is no big deal so no starting is just fine. The fact that you have it in the garage and you have nice temperatures in FL should also help.

So when I leave for a 6 month cruise, I can just leave it like that also?

As far as disconnecting the battery, i did this for one day, but the computer will have a bad idle for the first start when i get back wont it?

And what is gas stabilizer? Do i absolutely need it?

I've had good luck storing bikes for long periods of time with just a fresh oil change, Stabil in the tank (run through the carbs) and a squirt of ATF in the bores.

I stored my 98 Formula for four months straight and the car didn't even move an inch, and I didn't get flat spots on my GSCs. I pumped them up to 40psi before storage.

Your going to get flat spots. Thats a fact of life, but they will go away after the car is driven when you get back. The tires can be over-inflated to about 40 psi. After 6 months or so, they will leak down to around 32 psi. Overinflating them will not stop them from getting flat spots.

1. Clean the exterior prior to storage.

2. Store it with new or almost new engine oil.

3. Dump some gas stabilizer in the gas.

4. Inflate tires to 40 psi

5. Drive it around to get it up to operating temp and mix the fuel stabilizer throughout the system.

6. Park it in a closed garage if posible

7. Unhook battery

8. Put a car cover on it

Thats it... It can sit like that for over a year (mine has on 2 occasions).

Like Patman said.... You dont need anyone starting it or driving it around the block. All that will do is introduce lots of moisture in the exhaust system, crankcase, etc

Leave it and Forget it!
