I don't see Cometic gaskets listed on Thunders site. Guess I need to call.

What year heads you running?
Did you use the graphite head gasket or the newer 3 peice metal one?

FYI, during my head/cam swap one of the dowels from the ported heads was still in the head.

We put the dowels back in the block and put the heads on. We didn't notice that the one head still had the dowel in it. It sit normal and would not rock on the block unless you give it a very good shove back and forth. Fortunately, we figured it out quickly. Probably not the problem but you never know.

I'm royaly f'ed if it's the block.

Just had the block done, again, tested, honed, etc, etc. It's 'smoked' from the first time I started it.

I'm leaning to the head gaskets now myself.

I should have them off tonight, or tomorrow morning, and I'll take lots of pics.

*sigh*

Chris,

You definitely came to the right site for "tech" help. It's too bad that there isn't enough technical people over at LS1.com to help you. Welcome to LS1Tech, and good luck with your car.

I'm sure it's a headgasket if it leaked from day one it probably never sealed properly.

Are we sure about the sludge? I swear to you it feels and looks like my engine pre-lube.

I'll try to pull one or both heads off tonight and see if I had the gaskets on backwards or not.

I needed a serious opinion on what was going on from more people than were just on ls1.com, but, several of them have said the same things that have been said here. I wouldn't say that everyone over on ls1.com is 'dumb'.. just that the more/most knoledgeable ones either don't care, or don't visit anymore.

Trust me, I've seen the flames from one site to the other, and, me, I just don't really care for that... ls1.com's getting close to a hundred MILLION hits a month and has lost most of it's pure tech knoledge. It's become more of a general knoledge site IMO.

I installed gaskets that looked the same as the gaskets they made in mid 2000.. I guess the 'normal' graphite ones. I purchased the GM kit 88894342, and used those gaskets. Purchased them about.. oh, maybe 2 months ago.

I'm running GTP 5.3 S2 heads, D. Elgin racing cam, JE pistons, manley rods, stock crank.

Well hopefully when you pull the heads off you will see some little channels where the gasket is washed out...

I called a few dealers, and I think it's the right side gasket, is on back order from GM.

I posted yesterday on other options and pricing of gaskets, and didn't get much of an answer on where to get cometic or copper gaskets, or if it's even worth the time or money.

TPIS has some that raise the compression .5.. but, with already running about 12:1.. dunno if I wanna do that.

5.0l Ford IS a different kettle of fish.....

That is definately a head gasket issue.

Mello,

The torque specs for a stock LS1 head bolt is 65 ft/lbs. If you torqued them to 110-120, first off the bolt would break way before that and even if you could it would smash the gasket.........

Chris....

The Ford dowel/alignment pins that were used may have been the correct width, but too long which would not allow the head to make a tight seal to the block deck. And I bet that is exactly where your problem lays.

Just my opinion from what has been posted here.

As I said before, when you see that chocolate milk shake stuff in your engine, you HAVE a coolant leak into the engine oiling system. Bottom line....

Good luck,
Ron

Alright, more pictures. I pulled the passenger side head, and looked at the gasket. It looks fine to me. It also looks like it's installed correctly. The 'Front' is at the front, and 'This side up' is up. I can't think of another way in my head to flip it to the other side of the motor and install it backwards.

Looking at #4 piston, I notice that the exhaust valve is a different color than the rest. Could that be because it's been 'washed' by coolant?
