Default 6.0 L short block

Can you bolt in a 6.0 shortblock?I was thinking. Why cant i buy a stock 6.0l shortblock and put all my stuff on it such as the cam and heads and ls6 intake. Will all this stuff bolt right on or are they different?I know they may not be stronger than a stock ls1 but if the price is right it might be a cheap replacement and slight upgrade at the same time.My piston slap is getting louder and money is tight right now and im looking for the cheap way out if anything does go rong with my motor.

The only thing you have to do is drill and tap one of the alternator bracket mounting bolts. 30 min job and no big deal. Just BE CAREFUL and take your time...

You can't buy a shortblock from GM. You can get the bare 6.0L block for about $750 or so, or you can get the fully assembled replacement 6.0L for about $3750. I would opt for the Escalade LQ9 since it has 10-1 compression and hypereutectic flattop pistons and cylinder heads that mimic LS6 style runners. The regular LQ4 6.0L has cast aluminum dished pistons. The LQ9 would be more durable, as much as the stock LS1 is.
If you opt for a used engine, stay away from the 99-00 6.0L engines with cast iron heads, they have a longer crankshaft flange than the stock LS1 and will not be friendly to your transmission. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

you could get a good used block for $500 and have it bored .030 over to clean it up. even if you keep the bore stock i wouldn't use the stock 6.0 pistons, the have slapping issues too. this makes it a good excuse to upgrade to forged slugs!!!
and the iron block is stronger than the aluminum one; most boosted applications use them for that reason.

only problem i have seen on my iron block is what xtracajunss said, you have to drill and tap a hole on the block for the alt. bracket , and you have to place metal shims between the block and the location of the third hole ( atleast thats what i did) cause you can't drill there.

another thing to watch out for is your A/C compressor mounting holes. it's not as important as the alt. bracket issue but instead of using 4 bolts , you'll end up using three. no biggie since no one seems to have any issues with that.

Check on ebay... I picked up a 2002 longblock that looks new from a wrecked truck for 570.00. Good luck. Does anyone know how much it can be bored over?

Mine is bored to 4.60 but I think that 4.030 is more typical and more likely for most blocks.
