15w40 too thick? and What filter to use!?
Hey guys, i just got a case of royal purple 15w40 to put in my SS the next time around on the oil change. A few people have said that its too thick for my 34k miles car, and a few have said it will work better in my car. I dunno who to beleive, thats why i havent done the oil change yet. Im running 5w30 mobil 1 right now, and have been doing oil changes with it for about 8k miles now (bought the car used @ 27k, have receipts the guy used dino 5w30 every 3k)... Also, whats the best oil filter..? Ive been using the K&N oil filter with each oil change, but i hear good things about the mobil 1 filter... Help me decide on the oil and filter before i do this oil change!! Thanks

Now that the Ultraguard Gold doesn't come in a UPF58 anymore, the best filter is the Mobil 1 M1-206. As far as 15w40 goes, it is ok to use in the hot summertime, but that's about as thick as I would go. Generally speaking you can go one step higher than the recommended oil viscosity that a car maker gives. So if they recommend 5w30 and 10w30, you can safely go to a 15w40 oil in hot weather. I wouldn't go any thicker than this though, a 20w50 would be way too thick. The 15w40 will cost you a bit of power and MPG though. But if you drive it very hard, it'll provide a bit more film strength. I have noticed that RP 10w30 tends to thin out quickly, so if their 15w40 has the same tendancies, it may just shear back to a 15w30 soon enough anyways.

In articles I have read about the Gen III motors, it specifically states not to use too thick of an oil, due to the tighter tolerances in the new motors. In other words, use too thick of an oil, and there will likely be areas that will not be getting oil, because of delivery problems. Good luck.

That's why I think a 10w30 or a 15w40 is more than sufficient. There simply is no need to go thicker than this.

Re: 15w40 too thick? and What filter to use!?
Hmm.. so back to the main question.. am i ok with RP 15w40? or is my motor gunna explode... Have 34k on the clock, so i figured it would be a good time to step up the oil a little. And since i have no idea where to get the mobil one filters, ill just stick with the K&N oil filters that ive been using...

(in a nutshell it says that the Mobil 1 filters down to 10 microns, while the K&N is designed for faster flow and filters to 20 microns)
