Changed cam, now tons of blow-by and car burns a lot of oil
I have read about this happening to a few unlucky souls. I am now one of them. First some background:
My car had the Comp 212/218 cam for a year with no problems. My car used 0 oil. Then my mechanic (damn him) decides to put Royal Purple in the damn thing instead of 10W30. The car starts using oil, like 1-2 qts every 1000 miles. I just attributed that to the pcv system, and the super low viscosity of the Royal Purple getting through.
Anyway my car was always a little on the weak side (13.5 @ 106 stock, 13.11 @ 110 with headers, etc). I attributed it to low timing, as verified by autotap. And KR. Never knew where the KR was coming from.
So here it starts:
So anyway I throw in the TR224 cam. The first thing I notice is damn my car smokes blue smoke at freakin idle now. It used 3 qts in 500 miles of combined city/highway driving. I put some Restore in it and that seems to have calmed it down. The smoke is much much less noticeable at idle, and during a 300 mile drive last night it used maybe 1/4-1/2 a quart. Still too much.
So now I have a motor that needs to be re-ringed. My guess is that since my car is a '00 and has the low tension POS oil rings, the increased cylinder pressure from the TR cam was just too much. Just ******* great.
Anyone heard of this? Why do I always have to **** with my cars? I could have just left it alone. But noooo... I have to want to go faster. And now look what boat I'm in.

Before diving into the thing, make sure it isn't something simple.....
Disconnect your PCV (temporarily, cap the hole into your intake) and see if the smoking stops. After my H/C install, I had a fookin lake in my intake after some easy driving, and smoked like a beast.

Have you had the car tuned? What is your A/F at?
My experience with the TR224 is that the car ran extremely rich. I tuned with the maft and runs like a bull with low to no oil usage. Before tuning I was using some oil. I know the blue smoke is carbon build-up in the exhaust from non-complete combustion (ie rich). But when ever I run rich for nitrous, I get more oil usage and carbon build up on my exhaust tips. When I tune for NA....no usage no build-up. I think the PCV system is affected by the tuning of the computer, etc. BTW, I also have a Metco breather. I also use RP.
Good Luck!

THat sucks!
A friend of mine had the same problem. Thing that sucks though is he went back to the stock cam and it still does it.

I don't get why that would blow out your rings. Are you sure it's the rings? Did you do a compression test?

You may have a rich condition if you didn't use a MAFT or otherwise adjust for the change.
If oil is really being burnt, it can get into the cylinder via; rings, head gasket, and valves.
Since you changed the cam, giving more lift, the item of the above that was affected was the travel area of the valves through the guides and seals. I'd check the cheaper things to fix before rebuilding the fookin thing.

I have seen these type of posts before, but I don't recall anyone ever performing a compression test to eliminate the rings as the problem. Pull a plug and put a comp tester in there. There's only a few places that the oil can come from.

I seem to burn a bit of oil w/ the TR 230/224 but i'm starting to think its my valve stem seals. I did a leakdown and pulled under 12% on all cylinders... I have no tune on my car, but hope to have one soon. My car mostly smokes on decel, which is why i think it to be the valve stem seals.
