Default New motor is smokin...need some input from the experienced guys

Got a whole new shortblock in the car now. It's got ARP rod bolts, Total seal zero gap rings, and is otherwise stock. The car has GTP stage 2 heads and a .222/.222 .566/.566 114lsa cam. 918 springs. LS6 intake. Stock fuel system. MAFT is hooked up.

It's been smokin with the new motor. The car fired right up first try and hasn't stopped smokin since. Occasionally it seems to stop for a moment but starts right back up. Seems to do it a little less when it's cold. I have used my MAFT with ATAP to get my Ltrims at idle pretty close to 0. It still has stock tuning. Ls1 edit is on order. The intake side rocker arm bolts were sealed with black RTV sealant. The heads/cam were installed on an engine stand by a friend who has done them a few dozen times.

I'm not losing any coolant at all. Car doesn;t overheat. PCV is stock with a oil seperator type setup similar to the GREDDY one people have posted recently, but it's homeade. It's semi-effective like all the other setups. I do still get oil in the intake, but the smoke is excessive. The new motor only as about 80-90 miles on it and an additonal hour of run time. I see absolutely no oil out the oil cap if I remove it when the car is running! I would think this would eliminate the rings and show that they have seated. I don't get it. Where the hell is the smoke coming from?!? I can't see this being ALL due to the PCV. I go to HRP and see cars with similar setups run w/o near the amount of smoke as mine. They all smoke some, but not like this. I need some ideas to try.

Sounds like you may have a ring problem Joe as oil may be setting on top of the pistons causing additional smoke, but its hard to tell..Is your rings file fitted? That is a very precision process for you rings when the engine builder is doing them as per what my builder told me after taking measurements of mine.....I'm using the total seal rings in mine and the cost was high!!!

I don't know about the rings being file fitted. I'll have to find out. I can't really see it being with the rings with no smoke coming out of the oil cap? Even if I give it some RPM's with the oil cap off no smoke comes out. And, yes, those damn rings were expensive. Like $240 i think.

Just went and pulled a plug from each side(5&6). No oil! There is a very slight bit of carbon buildup. Very slightly rich it looks to me. But the plugs are dry.

using alot of oil?

try disconnecting the PCV and removing the oil fill cap when running...are you getting any "smoke" coming out of the oil fill cap? If so rings aren't seating...

May have one "culprit" cylinder if 5 and 6 look ok...try checking all 8 plugs

Joe,

You may have some bad valve guides. I have heard of this happening before with GTP heads. You might want to talk to Craig about this. Of course he is going to deny that anything is wrong with his heads, but if you eliminate the piston ring question, I would think it might be the valve guides.

I have tried every combo with and w/o the PCV system. I cannot make oil come out of the oil fill cap.

I guess I should go ahead and pull the rest of the plugs.

I can't really tell the color of the smoke. I don't know why, but it looks white to me. Every time somebody says that some smoke looks blue or grey, it always looks white to me <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

It is definately oil. I can smell it. I got the LTrims close to 0 so that should cover the a/f.

The car does not smoke when the motor is dead cold. After that it's anybody's guess. It smoke MOST of the time.

It has regular castrol GTX 10w30 in it right now.

It's only been about a week since we had it running. It's seen alot of idel time with me just throttle the rpm's each day while we finished up the TH350 swap. Other than that it's seen about 90 miles in the last 3 days. It's burned about a qt of oil.

mmiller. I'll remember that. Thanks.

Either it's as MMILLER suggested or it's probobly in the short block. Right bore/hone ring gap etc ? Sounds like a little more than a motor "breaking in".

The plugs do not have oil on them either.

Did a compression check. 220-225 on all cylinders. All the plugs look good...

if you don't have any oil coming out of the oil fill cap and none on the plugs it might be on the exhaust side (which is high vacuum) either a guide/seal or if the rocker stand is leaking into an exhaust port/runner
