Default Clatter when Startup what oil to use?

I have a 01 LS1 camaro. When i bought the car i noticed that there was a slight clicky noise when you start the engine up. I was told to use 10w-30 Mobile 1 synthetic oil to stop the knock on startup. I think it did help a little but there still is a noticable clatter when you start the car up and sometimes when im sitting still. I have put over 10,000 miles on the car since changing oil. Is there any other oil that is better or any other way to get rid of the clatter. or is it just the way the engine will be?

For starters IMO I wouldnt go near that long on a oil change. Even with synthetic id change it about every 4k or so but thats me. I do mine every 2500 to 3000 regardless. If you used 5w30 you may hear less clatter since its thinner and will travel through the engine faster on a cold start but, it will prolly burn a bit more.

I've tried a few different oils, and still get the clattering...I don't think it is something you will fix with oil. Just something you have to learn to live with on these engines...and it only gets louder with mods (like LT headers).

Default Just changed my oil...

Just changed my oil on my 4,000 mile 2001 LS1 engine. Went with full synthetic for the first time. I think the rockers are louder now, then before, when I was using the dinosaur oil.

Sounds like piston slap. My truck does this all the time. It does not matter what oil is in there. It's worse in cold weather. Oh well 114K and still runs strong.

That's exactly it...it sucks to hear it, but my car definitely wasn't affected power-wise. I've also done an oil analysis, and it showed no signs that it was adversely affecting the motor in any way. They are just noisy engines.

As Meent and others said, it's just something you have to live with.

Mine does it for the first few minutes after starting...but quiets down pretty well after it's warmed up a bit.

There is a oil that will calm this down . Its just that so many people are die hards in here that no one want to believe me on this topic!

www.bndautomotive.com

I put this in my 2002 z with 36 thousand miles on it and after about 400 miles . There is zero cold start slapping. Its 9.99 a quart and you truley only have to change it 12,000 miles . I have seen oil analisys test for cat diesel engines that run no stop before and after this oil and the after effects where so good it cost cat a 93 million dollar contract. There was almost no wear on the motors and the head honcho of cat thought this was a boguss claim aswell until he had his test lab run it and he was in shocked!

Once again to each his own . Please dont flame me on this just telling you what i know!

People would be more inclined to believe you if you didn't sound like such a nut swinger. I'd be more inclined to try this if someone else posted up a similar experience...I'd still highly doubt it'd calm down my piston slap in the mornings and on warm restarts. It is a mechanical issue, not lubrication.

I'm thinking about giving them a try. Did you read the GMHTP article they ref'd?

I ordered some of this stuff to see if it's for real. Spoke to Brian the owner today. Nice guy spent about 20-30 min on the phone with me and really explained the properties of the additives that are missing in the EPA friendly, over the counter world of motor oil. If the **** works 1/2 as good as he explained it, it will be a steal at $10 bucks a quart.

Based on the claimed anti wear properties of the oil, and your comments above, I would assume that this oil is heavily doped with ZDDP. Phosphorus is hazardous to catalyst life, so it is being phased out of modern oils. This is why a lot of flat tappet cam engines are having troubles with low phosphorus oils (API SM). If you look around, a lot of companies have high ZDDP oils, usually with about 1200ppm phosphorus. These are basically old API SJ spec oils. There isn't too much else that's special.
