Default Giving up the bottle and going all motor. I need cam help w/ARE StageII heads.

I am ditching the bottle and going all motor.
I recently aquired a set of ARE stageII heads milled for 11:1 compression and I am looking for the right cam.

The car is a daily driver, and needs to be emissions legal, 6 speed, FLP LT headers, Borla exhaust, 12bolt w/4:11 gears.

The B1 and T1 cams are passing emissions in my area.

Please take a second to help me and feel free to jump in if you think I have been given bad info.

Sterling.

Do yourself a favor & call ARE, speak to Wade & explain what you want to do with the car & how you want it to perform. He will pick out a cam for you that will match the flow of the heads. I dont care about emisions, so it was reccomended to run a 230/236 on a 112. I'm sure they can help you out.

You are probably right. I hesitated calling them since I bought the heads used (from Richie Carbone.) I feel weird using their time since I hadn't really given them any money.

What cam was Richie using? His car was running pretty damn good if I remember right.

Richie was using a cam recommended by ARE.. I think 226/234 Lunati cam.. I have driven Richies car with the old setup.. It was Nasty.. I am curious to see what a cam with 226/234 on XE-R lobes would do on your package.

They aren't going to care that you didn't buy them direct, the point is that you have their heads.

Just tell them you have their stage 2 & need some cam help. They will talk to you. Find out from Richie how much was milled off the heads. That will make a difference in figuring out how big you can go.

Their shipment of cams should be there this morning, mostly XE-R grinds. Give em a call.

Thank you everybody it looks like I had better start saving and give ARE a call.

Vince,
maybe I will guinee pig the 226/234 on XE-R lobes.

Is anyone else running these heads? What cam are you running? I am still watching the classifieds for a deal.

Byron,
Have you checked out www.arizonafbody.com yet?
The group is pretty new but it is also pretty active. we did a group cam install a couple of weeks ago and had a great time. I have been hearing the emissions are different now. If this is true I will get LS1 Edit and make a lot of changes: No more air pump, no more EGR, etc.

Sterling.

The idle on the 226/234 XE-R is going to be smoother than you think.. My 226 XE-R idles like stock.. No lope whatsoever.. Even with the cutout open it just sounded like NASCAR.. I miss the lope of the T1, but oh well.. I might make a change, but I do not know.. I want others to try stuff first. I have shared alot and I want others to share with me..

I thought the X-ER's were aggressive?

I can't stress enough the importance of matching your cam with the flow characteristics of your heads. I therefore think you need to call ARE and ask what they have that will compliment those heads--they'll also have the best idea as to what will and won't pass emissions. I don't want to talk for someone else, but I think Nick would be more than happy to provide you with a cam that will work. Despite the fact that you didn't buy the heads directly from ARE, if you're calling to ask about a cam, you're obviously interested in giving them business. No one is going to fault you for buying used heads in a effort to save a few bucks.

On the subject of emissions, check the actual procedure for the test. I know in AZ they just hook up the OBDII scanner and check for codes. They assume if there aren't any, the emissions hardware is working, therefore you pass. If your state uses a similar procedure, what's coming out of your tailpipe isn't all that important. Just something you might want to look into to save some time/money/work.

i have a set of ARE 5.3 heads with a T1 cam & all the bolt ons. in 95 degree weather & in desperate need of tuning, only launching around 4k with a stock clutch, stock 17" front/ MT ET's back & on the BRAKES the car ran 12.0 @ 110mph. the 2 previous runs were 12.2 @ 116mph coming out of the whole easier because of the clutch. with good weather(70's)tuning, clutch, & skinnies i say the car is good for a 11.5-11.6. my friend ran the B1 cam & was running 11.7's around the same MPH. he had a clutch though. he then got an LS6 intake,ed wright tuning & used skinnies & ran 11.47 @ 121mph.those cams are proven, & unlike i have heard worked well with nick's heads.i would still call nick though & get his opinion.
