Wow, spun bearings on a ported LS6 oil pump, that sux. I've talked with Straightline Performance and they recommend the Melling Oil Pump. I think I will be purchasing that one and give that one a try.

Did you port it? Was it ported/shimmed already? Pinched an o-ring? Anything you can add to this thread would be greatly appreciated.

I've been getting a few PM's regarding engine noises, ticks, knocks and rattles. Just because it is making a wierd noise, does not mean it's a spun bearing. It could be anything really. Collapsed lifter, loose valvetrain components, piston slap, or even exhaust leaks! Try to rule out symptoms for a better diagnosis. For example: Piston slap usually goes away when the car warms up. If it is creating that noise still, it might not be piston slap.

My original motor passed away at 115,000 miles a victim of spun bearings. So i took it to the Camaro Hospital and had a brand new Corvette Crate motor installed. It was on the road to recovery when at 4,000 miles it suffered a major relapse and spun the #1 & #3 rod bearings, took out the crank and was later found laying over on its side with 4 Hondas nursing off of it until its final breath. Its now locked up in rehab waiting on a transplant from Texas Speed with ARP hardware. By the way new LS6 motors come with new LS6 oil pumps and it put out between 60 to 80#s pressure all the time. Both motors were built by the GM factory. So I don't want to hear it.

And how many of these spun bearings are happening when people are overrevving the motors due to the cam swaps?

My engine is making a knocking noise when I go over 3,000 RPMS.... It sounds fine below that. I just rebuilt the entire motor replacing all bearings/seals/gaskets...

Sunday night, the tach died in my car. Later that evening it threw a p0343 DTC Code (cam position sensor high voltage), which would explain why it takes 3 tries to get it to start sometimes (1st crank-no fire, 2nd crank-backfire, 3rd crank-cranks up) This knocking noise didn't start until yesterday afternoon.

The engine has a little over 1,000 miles on it now.

Someone mentioned it could be that the 3 bolts that bolt the sprocket to the cam are loose. Would that cause that knocking noise over 3,000 RPMS?

My names Jason and I'm the owner of a Knock-a-holic 1998 Camaro SS, with 14,400 miles on the odometer and only 4 bottle of juice ran through it...it spun a bearing. WHEW, I FEEL BETTER...half the battle is coming to terms with your Knock-a-holic LS1.

I didnt even try the dealer, it has a cage, drag wheels, TH400, 12 bolt rearend. Like I can just pull in there with it on a trailer and ask for a new motor.

Whew, that made me feel better. 382 being installed in May.

Why do these engines tend to blow their bearings?

Weak rod bolts i suspect. They stretch a little bit and then it spins.
