Default Crap, when I installed my b1 about 4000 miles ago didn't put loctite on cam bolts..

The instructions I had for doing the cam install never mentioned putting blue loctite on the three cam bolts .I know I torqued them to spec,am I ok..probably will go back in there when I do heads and probably won't put more than another couple thousand miles on the car before then..how worried should I be..???It would seem would have to obviously pull off the water pump and balancer ,timing cover think thats it..??

Direct quote from my cam install page:
</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">
Then install the cam holder plate, And torque the lock tighted bolts.
</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">FWIW, "I", would pull the water pump, balancer, timing cover, upper sprocket&chain and "juice up" the cam bolts.

Why? For piece of mind if nothing else.
P.S., why your there, give degreeing your cam in a shot.

i'm curious about this as well. I didn't use any loctite when putting the front of my motor back on after my cam install either

I would think you are okay, at least until you do heads. GM doesn't put anything on them.

hate to be the bearer of bad news but I am living proof what no loctite will do. I lost my dowel pin for the cam and was going in about 2500 miles later to replace it and all three bolts were backed out a good 1/4 inch and hitting the cover. I would get in there immediately. Cause not long after fixing the pin and sceuring the bolts my timing chain snapped and now I am 7000 in the hole on the rebuild. Could be related maybe not.

At least if they back out the cover will keep them from falling out <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

5-liter-eater: How did you lose the cam dowel? Isn't that part of the cam itself.

It came loose and I found it the oil pan all chewed up, along with my gear. Got a new dowel pressed it in and lochtited it. No more issues after that. I've had my cam in and out 5 times now, and I never used loctite. Each time the bolts were still perfectly tight. This time I did use some loctite just for extra peace of mind.

No locktite here, 12k miles, I think if they are torqued to spec, you are ok...

Ok feel a bit better as didn't see loctite mentioned until raughhammers site I think..It sounds like a good thing to do but I guess I will play the odds until the head install next spring..
only planning on driving the car until end of october and it doesn't go to the track..just a few occasional tazzo runs or runs against buddies.
I will have to go in there pretty much for head install so might as well go put some loctite on the cam then.thanks for the tips and good to know most of you just torqued them in and they are fine..that dowel pin thing sounds like a flukey
thing ..not sure what kind of dowel pin my b1 cam from lunati had..

I think Cam bolts come with red-loctite on the ends, maybe? I prefer to use new Cam Bolts with cam installs also.

I always loctite the retainer plate and timing chain bolts with red loctite. Better safe than sorry..

As long as you torqued everything to spec, you should be fine though.

I would go back and add the locktite if nothing more than for peace of mind. When I installed the cam in my TA, we used mbaskett's install guide. It was new at the time and had the wrong torque spec for the cam bolts. It also didn't mention to use locktite. We torqued the bolts to 18 ft-lb. as the document stated (instead of the proper 26 ft-lb.) and did not use locktite. 5 miles later, my motor was trashed. The bolts backed out, knocked the dowel pin out of the cam, and allowed the cam to walk font-to-back in the motor. The block was ruined, as one of the lifters got jammed in the lifter bore. The heads were pretty much trash as well. And the cam was destroyed. I had to have the engine replaced.

Don't let it happen to you! At least you have a chance to prevent it.

I used the instuctions off the LS1info website and saw no mention of loctite so I didn't use any and the cam bolts haven't came loose, nor have any other bolts. I can't remember seeing any on them to start with honestly. But that's just my opinion.

I had my cam walk once. Lot's of broken parts ensued. <img border="0" alt="[kaboom]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_bomb.gif" />

I never had to Locktite any bolts on the old SBC. Guess these new-fangled motors don't hold torque as well. Hope I never have to tear into my motor. Sounds like a big pain in the butt! <img border="0" alt="[Burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

I've always used locktite on all moving parts that require fasteners. cheap insurance. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
