Help, how loud is the valvetrain noise supposed to be after a cam install?
I just got my car back tonight, after having a TR 220/220 .561/.561 114 LSA cam installed, along with Isky 295-D valvesprings, Ti retainers, and chrome-molly pushrods, and my engine has a ticking noise, and it sounds a little like a sowing machine. Is that how it is supposed to sound. I know that the fast ramp rates of the cam, along with the added spring preasure is supposed to add some valvetrain noise but how loud should the valvetrain noise be? Mine is pretty loud, and how should it sound. Please help!

We installed the TR224 114 cam in my friends car two weeks ago and have the same symptoms. He has been running the car pretty hard and drives it about 50 - 60mi everyday. Except for the added noise we haven't had any problems. We have even had the valvecovers off to check the pushrods. Everything is fine. If you have any problems, please post so that I know what to look for. In turn if anything happens I will post as well.

My engine does the same thing. From what I understand, the base circle of the new cam is slightly smaller and causes this. At least this is what I've been told. I had my rocker peddestals machined .025 and it helped a bit. I'm changing my cam again next week and will try longer pushrods to see if that helps.

is this the base circle of every aftermarket cam that is smaller??? i have the same problem with the hammer cam, it started about 700 mi after we put it in...it sounds like a lifter so i tore in to the damn thing again.

I have only a very slight ticking sound - I think I'm the only one who notices it. As long as everything else is OK, you should be fine.
Just give her some gas - I'm sure that'll drown out whatever else your hearing...

Man, I just had my car fixed, because the engine was tapping real bad.. They said it was the lifters, so they replaced them, and put a cam in for me.. Then they said it was tapping somewhere else, so they ordered a new engine.. I hope this wasn't the deal, with the camshaft making the ticking noise.. I might be paying for the installation of the new engine..

American Muscle, off topic, what kind of oil pressure you reading with the Katech pump?Did you shim it?TIA.
I thought a bit more valve train noise was to be expected with a fast ramp cam.I know all of the H/C cars I have heard have more noise.

Mine does it, I like it
I actually think (ok, guessing) it is the faster ramps on these cams making the valce click as it hits the seat. Thoughts???

Get a louder exhaust to mask the valvetrain noise
