Default Ridiculous Oil Consumption

I have a 2002 SS, and have been noticing about that the consumption of oil has been about
1qt/700miles. I've read some posts where guys
have changed their pcv's and add catch cans. What do you guys think is the best solution? If you've had this problem and have corrected it, I would really like to know. Thanks!

If it were mine with that kind of oil consumption then I'd be quietly but absolutely solid in my expectations for GM to solve it to my satisfaction. Simply unacceptable useage. Engine replacement would be my choice but ring replacement may need to be attempted first. Very thoroughly and in writing detail the condition of the car even to the extent of pictures if your peace of mind requires it. Make it fully understood that any damage during the attempted resolution of the problem is unacceptable as you paid for New and have not yet received an acceptable product.

If that does not work go with the Ring Fix and demand compensation for devaluation of the car. Just out of curiosity are you runnung synthetic oil?

Yeah I'm running castrol synthetic ... it happened before also when i was running regular oil. I have about 9.5K miles in my car. At around 4K I had LT headers and the loudmouth installed. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it ... either the components or the shop did something when they installed them.

You need to either get some LS1-edit tuning or use a MAFT/Atap to lean it out probably a bunch.
I bet it feels a little bit doggy doesn't it? Number one rule of LS1 modding....ya got to tune it with major mods like the exhaust change you did. Don't go crying to your dealer until you really check it out.....some will deny your warranty totally.

Just a word of advise... take your headers off before you go to the dealership. My car was eating 2.5 qts of oil per 1500 miles on my 01 SS, first they changed the rings, then it got worse. Soon as I clicked past 38000 miles one of the rings went out completely... anyways the GM rep came out to look at it and they denied me my warranty because I had headers on there (engine is still 100% stock). So I just had to buy a new engine.

Can someone explain to me why adding LT headers would cause oil Consumption. I am not trying to be a smart-*** I just really dont know. I can see it messing up the A/F pretty good, but oil consumption??

I would definately reccomend a dyno tune and probably a MAFT to get your A/F straightened out. I would also reccomend you switch back to a non-synthetic 5W 30 and see if that helps. how much oil did it use pre-header install?? Mine used about a quart evry 3K miles for the first 12K miles, now at 21K miles evrything seems to be seated well and it only uses about .5qt evry 3K miles, this is under lots of high rpm driving.

Good luck,
-Nick

PS: I think the rule book says that anything before TB and after cat CANNOT voild engine warrenty. Other things are up to discretion. I still do not see why LT's would cause ring problems though??? Lack of backpressure??

Oil consuption can depend apon your driving style. Do you floor it alot? Do you dive at high RMP?

I cannot believe that GM hasn't gotten this problem under control I've used almost a quart in the past 1000 miles, although with some very high rpm driving. I have nowhere near a quart in my PCV catch can, maybe a couple tablespoons of oil, which leads me to believe the rest of the oil is burning past the rings. I bet the more serious oil consumption problems are a combination of the pcv and the rings.

This article has fully answered my Oil Consumption problem questions. I was seeing almost identical consumption as you guys (2qts per 700-1000miles or so).

http://http://www.c5registry.com/2k2z06/page5.htm

High-RPM/Low load driving styles will eat oil. Thats why after my Vig 3000 stall got installed my low-oil light came on two weeks later.

Put in dino oil till your rings seat, and try heavier wt oils. Mix some 20-50w and see what happens.

Well, one therory that I have come to belive is that when you add a mod like headers, or a cam, it richens up the car so much that it actually increases the cylinder pressure so much from the extra fuel in there that it causes the rings (which are already weak) to allow more mixture and oil, to get by. I think that is why people are having these problems after header or cam install. Anyone have an opinion on this?

The reason they denied the warranty is because they (GM) looks for any reason to deny sucking down the expense. Headers don't have any impact on oil consumption! This oil consumption is a discrace to all of us. My C5 is starting to burn right now. The car is heavily modded cam/head car with 16K. My fix for it is a new 418 stroker with the right RING TENSION!!! That's half of GM's problem. the other 1/2 is there PCV system.

I saw a big change in consumption once I got it tuned.....don't know why but it worked. I also started running a 50/50 mix of 5/30 and 10/30 Royal Purple and used some AutoRx additive prior to last oil change. I just did some final tuning amounting to 8 pulls yesterday and then went out to the track last nite and ran it 7 times.....got up this morning and checked the oil....NO CONSUMPTION AT ALL AND CLEAN!!!!!!!!
BTW, I do also have a Metco breather which I don't think makes a difference...but looks cool.
FYI, ran my best ET........12.5XX
