Default Bored Iron or Aluminum Block?

I want to build a large cube motor with a D-1SC with about 10psi of boost. I was thinking of a 4.125" bore with a 4.25" stroke and 6.125" Rod. That would come to a 454cid. Match with a set of big ported LS6 heads, a matched cam, induction and exhaust. Now this would be a street machine, so not have a wild idle or super loud muffler system. Now the question. How much power can a aluminum block with the cylinders replaced with the siamesed bore sleeve handle? What are the benifits of the truck iron blocks?

I would go with the Iron block if you are pushing that much boost. The walls get pretty thin with a resleeved block. I do not know how well the alunimum block will hold up.

I was at about 525 RWHP with this last engine. No problems from the block. It could have taken ALOT more. I wouldn't be scared to say an aluminum block could reliably take 650 RWHP.

Hey Colonel, ever thought of running FI on your 422?

No I haven't. Having too much fun NA right now. I want 8s on motor. Save the FI for 7s. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

I'm interested in this too. I saw a sponsor recently remove a pitch to re-sleeve new aluminum LS1 blocks to 4.1 for $2,300. He said he stopped selling them because his bread and butter was really LT1 motors.

Not sure what to make of this but assume they had problems...

the iron block is about 100 lbs heavier ...not sure if it can be had new from GM...

Let me know what you find out about the blocks...

I am more concerned in the block cracking. I know that the siamesed bores have stronger walls. If I can get away with a 100lbs less on the nose the better

The C5R block comes with a 4.125" bore and is still Aluminum. A bit pricy, but if you're building up a ~454 with FI, I doubt too much that price is a factor.

The iron block can be had from GM, but even that will require a pretty big over-bore to reach 4.125".
