Default Teach me all i need to know about pushrods!!

What are they, where are they, what do they do, how do you bend them, what happens when you bend them, what do they look like, and everything else i need to know. I've been hearing a lot of peopel saying that they have bend theirs, so i'm just wondering. how does the bending occur, how do we know if we bend them...
Also, can our trannies (M6), even downshift into such low gears to cause damage to them, dont we have like a limitation to how low in gears we can go down at a certain speed, like i dont think it is possible for someone to downshift to first at like 80mph. Please educate me, lol, there is a lot of things i know, and a lot of things i need to learn-this being one of them!!

Thanx guys! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

A pushrod is a thingy do thats a big part of your valve train. Theyre in your engine betwene your rocker arms, and the lifters. The cam pushes the lifter, the lifter in turns pushes the pushrod, then the pushrod pushes the rocker and the rocker pushes down on the valve opening it up, either letting air in. or exaust out. You bend them by missing a shift. Depending on how bad you bend em it will be to where your valve dosent open all the way, or it wont open at all. It looks like a rod, thats about it, the stick length is 7.400 (I think). The other things u need to know is that the stock ones suck, so get a better set, theyre fairly cheap I guess. You can get a heat treated set for about $110-130 dollars. and if u wana know anything else just ask. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

And how hard are they to install, is it something that needs to be done profesionally?

If you can turn a wrench you can change your push rods.

Pop off the valve covers. You will see your rocker arms lined up in there. Remove the rocker arms one at a time, keep them in order so you can put them back in the same location. Lift out each push rod with your fingers, and slide a new one in. Put your rocker arms back on in the order you took them off but don't tighten down all the way. There is an order to tightening down the rocker arms, plus you have to turn the crank to change the load of each rocker arm. Off the top of my head here at 1 AM I don't remember the order. Anyway you can look it up or some gear head on here can post it. After the rockers are on put the valve covers on, then coil packs etc. It will probably take you between 30 min to an hour depends on how quick you can pop the valve covers.

...and yes, you can pretty much shift into any gear (except reverse) at any speed. It's not missing shifts that generally causes you to overrev (the rev limiter catches you), it's accidentally shifting into a lower gear when you mean to shift into a higher one (the rev limiter doesn't help in this case since you are physically forcing the engine to higher rpms.)

Having said that, if you never make this not-so-uncommon mistake, you very well may keep the stock pushrods for the life of the car. I've never bent one in either of my M6 LS1s. <knocking on wood>

Ok, so i'm guessing if one did bend them, you could feel it in the car, like it would shake, studder, or go slower??? Like could you feel it performance wise??

Heres one of mine from a missed shift. It caused an obvious ticking sound. But the motor didnt shake or run bad. Notice that the end to end length didnt change that much, even tho its bent alot.

If you have a stock valve train (ie - stock valve springs) - then you should NOT upgrade to hardened pushrods just to prevent bending from occuring.

On a stock valve train motor - think of the pushrod as the "fuse". Yeah, it sucks when it bends - but think about what happens when you overrev a stock valve spring and the pushrod does NOT bend (hardened pushrods) - valve *smacks* piston - grenades motor into a bunch of little pieces, and you get to carry your motor home in a little box...

Bottom line is if you are going to put in hardened pushrods - make the jump to some nice aftermarket valve springs too. All of these things come with doing a cam - if you have a stock motor there isn't much need to upgrade any of these parts.

Can anyone show me where to find the correct order for tightening the rocker arms? I plan on doing this mod before long, but I want to make sure I do it right. Thanks!
