Default What if a shop told you your rebuilt STOCK motor..

should not be taken to 5800RPM, ever.

If you had your STOCK motor rebuilt to STOCK specs, no mods at all (airlid only), now has a knock under high load conditions would you be upset?

Secondly, if the shop said you can't take it to RPMs greater than 5K, ever, would you be upset? Their claim is that it (the LS1 motor) is not designed to see those RPMs.

This is with stock revlimiter, et al.

This is a buddy's motor, not mine.

Yeah, to simulate the knock he applies the e-brake and lets out very slowly on the car in 1st or 2nd gear and it knocks pretty loud but in neutral it's fine. He is still breaking it in and has yet to take it over 3800RPM. Also, they put 5W-20 oil in it

Stock rev limit for LS1 is set at about 6,200 rpm so the rebuild should be able to rev to the same rpm. The 5w-20 oil to too thin. Car needs 5w-30 in it.

Might be time to get a lawyer to send them a letter etc.

This what the shop claims about the LS1 motor:
"GM didnt build the motors to be raced like that... we're all taking a chance of rbeaking on motors when we rev that high (to the stock rev limiter on a stock LS1)"

1)check what brand parts they used and everything you can about what they put in the inside, they coulda put some cheap used or less than oe spec parts and thats why they dont want you to take it past 5000 cause they think you might break em. 2)like what was said earlier, get a lawyer. you wanted a stock rebuild but got parts that are weaker than stock. If I were you I wouldnt even brought it to the board, I would have already raised hell.

I've been bouncing off the rev limiter at 7100 rpms with 01 LS6 springs and cam for about a year and a half. I would not rev past 6k on stock springs they are weak. But this guy is full of ****. I have built many of these motors and I never tell anybody to not take it past 5k rpms. You only build a sports car with a v8 for one reason. To run the **** out of it.

Try to take off in a higher gear in any manual and you will get a knocking sound. Too much load for engine at low rpms.

I know what I'd say to that shop: goodbye, thanks for your time

Especially for putting in 5w20, what the hell were they thinking? A thin oil like that is going to make the piston slap even worse, as there is a thinner layer of oil film to cushion things.

According to what I have read from GM, the rev limiter is there to protect the accessories, not the engine! It could actually rev higher without a problem.

Many of the "Fast Guys" are going way past 5,000 rpms let alone 6,000!!! These guys are turning 6,800 -7,000 rpms on a regular. The weak point on the LS1's are the stock springs and even then, I think people are under estimating the stock springs because of the bent push rod thing. I think the only reason people are bending pushrods is because they're probably zinging the motor to 7,000 rpm, because the stock LS1 clutches are slow to react. I never had a clutch related problem with my LT1 car. On the same token if you reved a stock LT1 car to 7,000 rpm you would probably run into severe valve float, or bust a pushrod, or even bend a valve. The LS1 bottom end is very strong. Your motor guy should stick to lawnmower repair and leave real engine building to real men!!!!!!!!!!

I seem to remember that the sam camaro was reving to 7000 plus for quite a while, and i also know that the ASA uses ls-1 as a spec motor reving 6200 plus,I also know lots of people in the motorla cup and scca that turn these engines 6000 plus for extended peorids of time. So in short the wise decision would be to take your business elesewhere.

Well first thing first: tell us who the shop is! I certainly don't want to go there and I certainly don't want anyone I know to go there. That shop shouldn't even be working on your car, because they haven't got the first clue. If I were you I would seek some legal advice, or just get that car the hell out of there. Better yet, request your money back and give them the engine. Take your car to a reputable LS1 shop.
