Default {urgent} Can you take a freshly installed stock head bolt out and then re-use?

I torqued it to the TTY spec 5 minutes ago and I wanna know if I can pull that bolt out right now to check that hole and reinstall it? Will it be fine? Thanks.

Sorry man, once it has been torqued its useless. Either leave it alone or get a new one to replace it with. Its not something worth skimping on. Whats making you wanna pull the bolt anyway?

I think I left a bit of coolant in there and I wanted to pull it out and check. What should I do?

Do you want to remove one bolt, or all of them? I bet you could reuse one. Worst case, remove the one bolt, then pick up another new one later this week and replace it.

I talked to a dealer service tech last week. He says he reuses those bolts all the time. He also says he replaces the intake gasket every time he takes the in take manifold off. Both of these statements contradict what is said here all the time.

Yeah, just one bolt. I wanted to just back it out and check and reinstall it.

BigTex, service reps are idiots for the most part. I wouldnt let a dealership touch my car with a 10ft pole. The bolts are TTY, not reusable. You can back it out and check, but I would replace it. Also if ther eis a bit of coolant in there you should be fine. Just torque down slowly and it will bleed itself out.

I reuse intake manifold bolts, they are not torque to yield. I use loctite upon installation. I replace intake manifold gaskets every time. It is specified in the GM sevrvice manual to replace the gaskets. I believe in working on customers cars as they are my own. This means the only way is the right way. Think of it this way, if GM is footing the bill for the repair under warranty would you want me to reuse gaskets? Didn't think so . If your going to do it, do it right.

However, I will never reuse a head bolt, those are torque to yield. I believe this was the origional question. NastyC5, if your concerned about having coolant in the bottom of the hole, get a new bolt and replace it after you get the coolant out. If its just a few drops, I wouldn't worry about it and leave it alone.

Cammin BeaSSt, sorry you feel that way about dealership technicians. There are good ones and bad ones out there. Takes a little bit of effort to find a good one, and once you do request he work on your vehicle again. There are a lot of boneheads out there that think they know everything. Just like any other profession the few bad apples ruin the reputation for others who take pride in their jobs. I have a long list of customers that come in my dealership and request I diagnose and repair their vehciles. These are people from Z06 vette owners to cavalier owners and everything in between. I'm sorry if I took your opionion to heart, I take pride in what I do, and I take my time to contribute to this board even though I don't own a LS1. See not all technicians are all that bad. Now lets go have a beer

The bolts are torque to yield.... so to stay within specs I don't think you can reuse them...

Get some ARP studs and torque to their recommended values. You can then use them over. Might save money in the long run.

I have 1 re-used bolt on my car and it hasn't given me a problem in the last 8000 miles. It turns out I had one bad brand new bolt that wouldn't go in and it was replaced with a used bolt that has been working fine.

To the techs above. Dont take it personally. I realize there are AWESOME GM techs out there, bottom line the dealership still screws us in one way or the other no matter how good the tech himself is. Best of wishes and Im ready for that beer you offered.

Jay[/QB]

I'm also a GM Master Technician and ASE Master Technician and work a Pontiac Dealership. I agree with Jay4speed. There are good technicians who care about their work and some who are only their for the money. I take pride in my work. I also have a long list of F-body and y-body owners who come to me to work on their cars. Performance and regular work.
I would not reuse a torque to Yeild bolt ever. Like stated above: Slowly tighten the bolt. The coolant will rise up the threads. You probably won't get the exact torque, but will probably be enough to avoid problems. Either do that or Buy a new head bolt.
I will never reuse intake gaskets because of personal experience. I tried it on one F-body and had a vacuum leak. I was setting lean codes. I tried the spay carb cleaner to find the vacuum leak. But with the gaskets being under the intake the carb cleaner was not reaching them.
Just take your time and do it right the first time and you will save your self some aggravating hard to find problem that you caused.
