Anybody port thier own heads with decent results?
I've been thinking about buying a set of 5.3 heads and trying this on my own. I've ported quite a few gen 1 heads and a couple sets of LT1's with good results. What I need to know is where my time is best spent. For istance, gen 1 heads have a poor short side radius and bowls, where LT1's have an excelent short side radius and you can actualy hurt flow if you mess with it. So, what do I need to work on and what do I need to stay away from? I'm not looking to get 300 cfm out of these, maybe 270 or so. I'm also planning on using the stock valves, just having a valve job done and a 30* back cut on the intakes. I think I do this for around $500 bucks, including used 5.3 heads the valve job and 02 LS6 springs (I plan on using the hot cam). Anybody else tried this?
Thanks
Chris

Re: Anybody port thier own heads with decent results?
First time porting heads.
6.0 heads
Ferrea 2.02 1.55 valves
Heads milled 0.030 yeilding 63.5cc comb. chamber volume.
Intake ports 214cc.
I don't have a flow bench.
Picked up @20 rwhp.
Spend about $900 (parts and machining) and 50 hours. I had standard valve seat grind from local machine shop. Should have sent the heads to TEA or someone for the seat work.
Next time I will spend a little more and go with a sponsor for porting, but hey you never know till you try.
I didn't mess with the short side at all. Maybe I would have picked up more by working that.
I did bowl work, removed bolt boss, streamlined valve guide boss, polished chambers.
386 rwhp, on stock tuning (rev limiter raised to 6.6k), stock MAF, stock pulley, and LS1 intake.

Re: Anybody port thier own heads with decent results?
Man, I didnt realize I'd start such a mess for you with this post Jeff. lol But like I said, I'm gonna get back with you after christmas cause with those flow numbers and the price you quoted me I'd be stupid not to get them from you. I just wanted to try it to see what I could get out of them. They wont go on a car until I get them flowed and might never go on one. And to all you guys wanting this info, if youve never ported a set of heads b4 plan on ruining a set or two before you get it right. It is not as easy as it sounds. I ruined quite a few before I was satisfied enough to put them on a car. BTW Jeff, have you ever done LT1s? I've got a buddy that might be looking to have his done very soon. I'm in the procces of moving and dont have time to help him out
