Default People who had both TR224 and TR230-Jason...

Ok, I know its been beaten to death but what happened? So people are dynoing more on the top-end with the bigger 230 but what about the better midrange of the 224? Forget dyno numbers, anyone have any track numbers?

Check Jsears web page.He has run both and has trach #'s and Dyno #'s of both.
From what I've seen the 224 makes more tq/hp in the midrange and gives up about 8hp/0tq on the top.

I have had both cams in my car with stock heads. My car dynoed 390/376 with the TR224/114 cam. I ran 11.50@121 on a 1.70 60' using 26" ET Drags and 4:30s. Raceweight was 3400lbs and the density altitude was -1500'.

I then installed the TR227/224 114 cam and dynoed 394/379, but didn't get to make any track passes with that setup.

Next, I installed the TR230/224 111lsa cam and dynoed 401/377. A few weeks back, it ran 11.25@121 on a 1.54 60' using 28" ET Drags and 4.56 gears. Raceweight was 3400lbs. Only changes since the 11.50 passes was the gear/tire change, Wolfe 6pt cage, lighweight carpet, and removed AC. Density alititude was -96'.

Here are some dyno comparisons:
TR230/224 111 vs. TR224/224 114
TR230/224 111 vs TR227/224 114

We have done several TR224/224 -> TR230/224 swaps and have seen pretty consistent gains in the upper RPMs with sacraficing little to no hp/tq down low.

Jason, you said "Only changes since the 11.50 passes was the gear/tire change ....". Valid experiments require that only one variable be changed for each test. Your gear and tire changes are very likely as significant as the cam change if not more so. This is suggested by the fact that most of your ET improvement came in the first 60 feet.

Respectfully, Gary

Yes, Gary, I agree it was not a perfect comparison between the two cams since the gearing/tire combo was different and the weather was definitely not the same. A vast majority of the ET improvement was the reduction in 60' times.

The closest comparison I have would be when I ran the car with the TR224 cam at Hattiesburg in nearly the exact same air as I did with the TR230. The car went 11.6x@119.46 on a 1.69 60' with the 224 cam. Again, however, this was w/ 26"/4:30 combo. Still, the TR230 was about 1.5mph quicker in similar air. I also don't believe the 28"/4.56 gear combo is worth anything on the top end (MPH). If anything, it is going to hurt due to having less effective gearing compared to the 26"/4:30 and a heavier tire. The only reason for going to this combo was because I was unable to hook the car with the 26" slicks.

Based on what I have seen, I do believe the TR230 cam is worth 1mph over TR224.

Jason,

You folks at Thunder have sold alot of TR-220s

Just wondering; Do you have any dyno numbers and/or ETs from anyone using this cam with maybe headers and heads?

Thanks,
Ron

Thanks for the info Jason. The comparisons were a little different but at least I got one. You explained the tire and gear change were different and the lower 60ft. was defenitely better with the 230 but what about in a street race from a roll of about 25mph when it all comes down to power, not traction. Thats where I do about 100% of my racing anyway. I just go to the track to see if the mods that I do make an improvement. Who do you think would win then in identical cars?

Assuming both cars are equal, except for the cam, I would expect the TR230 to put 3/4 of a car on the TR224 cam from 25-120 roll.

My friend has 315 DR's and hooks fine at 25mph with 440rwhp/420rwtq. He does have stock 3.42 gearing though???

I dynod at 389 rwhp and 382 tq , Traction is not to good at 40 mph from a roll in 2nd gear. I only make 371 hp throught the muffler and traction is still not that good in this cold weather although my Nittos are bald . (perfect for the track)
