Default Bmw recommending 10w60 for engines of M3's?

In the latest autoweek publication there have been a number of M3 engine failures for 01 and above that have been attributed to main rods and bearings problems.
They do revv the hell out of these cars but what's the benefit of 10w60 and can this be related to higher revving ls1??

Its thicker so it provides more cushion between the bearings. They only began to call for 60 weight oil after they found out these things were grenading like that have been.

Lots of guys who run nitrous also run heavier weight oil to cushion the bearings.

The thicker stuff won't shear as much at higher speeds, but this is more of a band-aid solution to an egregious engineering error

Using a heavy weight oil is never a solution to and engineering problem. You want to run the thinnest oil for the application per manufacturers recommendation. Thin oil both lubricates and cools better than thicker oils. Added to that is a modest power gain. Tolerances on stock LS1 motors do not allow for a viscosity above 10/30W. For a built motor 15/40W synthetic is probably the best viscosity to use in high HP applications.

I guess the LS1's piston slap issue has nothing on this problem. Spend $53k and have your motor go at 6k miles!!! They sound like *** anyway. I raced an M3 on a back road one night....they are VERY fast and handle on turns too!!!

I would own one except I can't pay the $65K for these boats!

I saw a 1999 used one that was supercharged for $38K!!!! wow ...are they kidding us with these prices?

That is one thing about the BMW Market, especially in my area. Even the 98 and 99 model M3's are selling for just about MSRP. They are a GREAT car and some of the best service you will get from ANY car manufacturer. The cars will "generally speaking", run for ever. If you stick with the maintanance plan. But the new M3's are just built to to tight of tolerances and its lunching the motors. People with 00-02 or even 03 M3's might be stuck with a bearing issue (almost like an LS1 piston slap excuse from GM ). In 04 you can bet that BMW will have the situation unscrewed. The 3 series makes up for most of its sales and with the M3 and M5 being thier flag ships you can bet that they dont want those cars getting a bad name.

No Wonder. WTF were they thinking releasing a 12:1 CR engine that was supposed to rev to 8K reliably over a 100K mile life (although Honda did it with seemingly no issue). Seems like a contradiction of terms. Dont get me wrong, BMW engineers some of the best powertrains on the planet, IMHO this one was just a little radical. At some point you have to realize you just need more cubes or a few more cylinders to make power reliably.

I'll take piston slap, ring flutter and a $13,000 500rwhp engine upgrae anyday to 112 engine failures. I know we have blow up alot of LS1's but it's because of abuse, these guys just make them go BANG without anything out of the ordinary!

Just changed the oil on my GF's Jetta, I tell you when you have to go thru that much crap to change oil on a car and you can't buy a filter anywhere! Germans never do anything simple. If they did they would stop maikng 8,000rpm engines with the piston speed of a Winston Cup engine.
