looking for good info on main bolts, bearings, and piston rings
i'm rebuilding a 1999 LS1, using ported heads and MTI T1 cam from my stock motor. stock crank, rods and pistons with ARP rod bolts.
what parts do you all suggest? i dont need the highest $ parts, but of course i dont want cheap redneck crap either.
I'd like ARP main BOLTS instead of studs, but i cant find a correct application. Should i just save my $ and get GM main bolts? I've even seen GM main bolts be re-used with no problems.
I have Federal Mogul bearings and Sealed Power Rings, but i'm not sure that i want to use these... mainly the rings because each one is supposed to have a 'dot' to show the top side of the ring, and a few of them dont.
I also need cam bearings. let me know what you guys think.
thanks in advance <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

i'll do some checking cody.
btw, what do you all think about Clevite Bearings? Do they make a bearing kit for LS1'ers??
Also, ARP Bolts seem to be the way to go...or are the studs good enough?? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Re: looking for good info on main bolts, bearings, and piston rings
I'm in the process of rebuilding my stock motor as a spare since I just installed a forged 346ci motor. The motor had stock heads and a TR230/224 cam, and I will be reusing the cam with a set of ported heads with stock valves.
This motor's whole purpose is to be thrown back in the car when I have to pull the current motor for whatever reason.
Here is what I did to it:
-stock crank/rods/pistons
-cylinders honed
-JE file fit rings
-Federal Mogul cam and main bearings, Clevite rod bearings
-ARP rod bolts
-GM head bolts/gaskets
I purchased the rings, ARP rod bolts, and GM bolts/gaskets from Thunder Racing. I had the block honed and cam bearings installed at Futral Motorsports , along with purchasing all the bearings there.
I'll be doing the assembly myself.
You can rebuild one of these motor pretty cheap. This motor should be good to go for a long while before needing to be freshened again.

Re: looking for good info on main bolts, bearings, and piston rings
thanks for the replies. ben, i've checked out thunder racing and i'll probably order a couple of things from them.
still looking for a few more replies though so if you read this thread, please post up what parts you guys used <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
the only reason i would go with ARP main studs or bolts is if a few people from here tell me that GM bolts are insufficient for 470-480 hp

Re: looking for good info on main bolts, bearings, and piston rings
While we're on the subject of bearings, does anyone have any opinions/experience with coated bearings?
MORE Performance carries FM bearings coated by Calico Coatings. It's time for me to freshen up the engine, and was thinking of using the coated bearings for the extra tiny bit of safety margin in the event of a loss of oiling situation. Plus, there may be 1 or 2 hp to be had from a reduction of frictional losses...
Will bearing clearances be the same with a coated bearing?

Re: looking for good info on main bolts, bearings, and piston rings
alright, i have some part #s here. I've emailed Allan @ Futral MS this so i figured i'd post here as well.
Rings- Federal Mogul Sealed Power- Part # E-938K.
In the 'TOP GROOVE' section of the box sit rings with the pink painted mark on them, and not one of these has a dot to mark the top side.
There is no noticable taper on the inside edges of these rings, the inside edge is just SLIGHTLY evenly rounded.
In the 'SECOND GROOVE' section of the box sit rings with the white painted mark on them. Each of these rings has the dot marking the top side and has a noticable taper on what would be the bottom side.
The 'BOTTOM GROOVE' section rings are pretty straight forward.
Main Bearings- Federal Mogul Part # 7298 M 10
Rod Bearings- Federal Mogul Part # 8-2555CP 10
I cant find any place that lists these part numbers. I'd really appreciate any help you could provide in checking to see if these are LS1 worthy.

Re: looking for good info on main bolts, bearings, and piston rings
i learned this morning that the only LS1 part carried over from SBC are the rod bearings... and that the main bearing size is larger than all but 400 SB.
so if these are 400 SB main bearings they would work, or am i just assuming?

Re: looking for good info on main bolts, bearings, and piston rings
You are going to need LS1 specific main bearings. I have used the Federal Mogul 152M in both of my motors.

I have the coated main and rod bearing on my car, and so far so good. They sure as hell wernt cheap though. They have been in for about 12k miles now.
