Got to get things rolling, & ready for the ARE all bore 393. Has anyone pulled the motor from the top? With the tranny, or without?

Definitely easier from the bottom. It can be out in a few hours from the bottom with a lift, but not impossible with TALL jack stands.

taking off the hood is a start. It will be 10x's easier to drop the tranny first, in my opinion. Then just make sure you have all the sensors and wiring on the bottom side of the motor off. It also makes it easier if the heads are off of the block. loosen the motor mount bolts and life it out of there, angle the chains for the cheery picker so that the front of the engine is higher than the rear. good luck

I have done it both ways. From the bottom is definitely easier (can have it done in less than 1.5 hrs). However, it is not that bad from the top. I left the hood on the car I took the motor out of from the top and didn't have any issues. It probably would be best just to get it out of the way though. I took the tranny out, along with all the accessories (AC, alt., water pump, etc), crank pulley, and intake manifold, and fans/radiator. You can leave the cylinder heads on. Also remove all grounds wires going to the block and misc. sensor connections. I had it done in less than 6 hours by myself. It really isn't that bad.

Get that air wrench out and just start unbolting everything you can and clear the engine bay. Then when you just have the short block in there you can lift that out easily. It only takes two highschool kids to carry the short block so with the engine hoist you are set. Air tools will probably be great for this.

I have done it both ways, and will never do it from the bottom again. There are plusses and minuses for each way. The big negative from the bottom is that you have to leave the car on the lift until it is done.
From the top, you don't need a lift, it's easier to drop the tranny first. Take off the intake and everything from the front of the engine and it comes right out. No tilting necessary. You do have to remove the radiator also. Also have never needed to pull the hood off. Never has been in the way for me.
