Interest in BIG BORE aluminum blocks
TEA, the leader in affordable CNC ported heads, is considering offering CNC'd LS1 blocks featuring the new Darton liners that can be bored anywhere from 4.000"-4.165". These new liners are thicker, more true then dry liners, and are very rigid. These new liners at 4.000" bore should be as strong as a iron block without the weight penalty. At 4.125-4.165 bore ranges this block will help the heads to flow more air and make more power, if the chamber around the valves is deshrouded to match. Please respond here or e-mail with interest. I think there will be interest Brian, but the intake will begin to become a serious limitation on these motors. If someone would develop a reasonably priced intake capable of supporting big CID, I bet you'd sell some.

LPE claims there only good to around 500 hp are you saying that they will handle more? And with the deck surface completely machined out what holds the inner and outer sides of the block from moving at higher power level? Show us a dyno sheet befor you say to much!!

Baddmood - you should watch what you say, I never said the sleeves were only good to 500hp. I said that we had only dyno tested them in the 500-600hp range. We have been working on this project for almost 3 years now, and we are very confident in the sleeves. The block we had in our booth at PRI is currently being finish assembled in N/A form, and will go on the dyno for a couple more power pulls,we will dissassemble it and double check everything. Then we are going to re-assemble the SAME block, in TT form, and do some long term durability testing, and some high boost testing. Sorry to jump on TEA's thread, but we need to keep the record straight. I'll start my own thread on this topic shortly.

Ummm...if LPE uses Darton sleeves, (and they do, as per the big discussion a few weeks ago) does that mean their motors only mak 500 hp?!?! ARE motors only make 500 hp also? Hell, somce of their Darton sleeved motors take 500 hp of juice!!
Anyway, back on track...Brian, I think you have established a very good reputation on thi sboard, I know I really want some TEA heads <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> Post some preliminary pricing based upon interest (i.e. "commitment" for 10-20 blocks x price 20-50 y price) and the interest will get even better than it already is! Now, create an all-out 427 6.0 headed NA motor as well as a big-a$$ low-comp FI motor of your very own, and you'll really be one of the big boys in the LS1 world!! (no disrespect to you now <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" /> )

Ed sorry 500-600 where's the dyno sheet don't start freaking on me.Why have you had to work on this for three years why so long are you having problems and why did you not answer my question in the other thread.

I'm not freaking out, just trying to prevent you from spreading incorrect information. I honestly didn't see a question from you in a previous thread, but I would be happy to answer anything you want to know. We should have the N/A version on the engine dyno late today, or tomorrow. I will post a Dyno sheet, and answer any questions at that time.

BaddMood I responded to you in the other thread regarding your question. As for why LPE has been working on darton sleeves for 3yrs, I guess that question is best left to Ed. But, those sleeves have been in ARE motors for several years. Another thing is that not every product is ready to slap in and run. Sometimes it takes some R&D cycles. Ya' know long term doesn't mean 1 week...
Anyhow, I am not flaming you, but just understand machining a block and coming up with a whole new sleeve design isn't something you just pull out of your butt one afternoon. There is a lot of work and research that goes into something like this. If you know anyhting about LPE or their processes, it isn't going to leave the shop or see the light of day until is is absolutely right. That is simply the way John is about everything he has ever done, and that the way he has always run his shop.
Anyhow, I don't want this to turn into a hijacked thread. So, lets just drop this in this thread and take it up in Ed's...
Now to the real point of this thread, props to TEA who has been one of the price leaders for stepping up to the plate on this. I think everyone would like to see pricing. But I think this bodes well for the performance community in general. Do yoiu have a timeframe on when this will start. Lead times, etc... ???

Affordable Big Bores! That is the one thing that would make me wish I'd waited on doing heads and cam!

The tentitive pricing would be $2800, the Darton wet sleeves are approximatly $1200 so this is a big chunk, the machining to accept the sleeves is obviously a big cost, hone to size, deck each side and align bore the mains. I had not thought about what "30th TA 0219" brought up but it would make the justification for the equipment easier. I believe if we could get 10 people to commit we could do an introductory price of $2600, 20 people to commit $2400 and 30 people $2200. This would probably be a one time price, but we can see how things go. The catch is a Feb delivery date for equipment and probably a March/April delivery time frame for product, I don't want to rush these things out the door. If anyone has enough interest to commit then please e-mail me. Thanks to all who responded Brian
