Default Anyone have experience with the ARE 226/234 cam?

Not quite sure on the rest of the specs. Mikey has suggested this cam for my bird Anyone have any numbers of cam only gains as I will be doing H/C in two stages. Also any prediction #s with my current set of mods? Also any sound byes would be KILLER! I want to pull up to a light and know I have a cam

Thanks in advance.

OnyxSS had that cam. Car ran strong with it with ARE S2 heads. Dave used about a 1000 rpm idle and it occasionally had a rough start, but otherwise he felt it was streetable. I drove it and when it was warm it was fine.
However, with a 1000 rpm idle you'll be fighting the cam at stoplights with a TT3000 3.0 STR converter.

If you plan to stay with your converter, I would go smaller so that the max idle you need is 850 - 900. Also, with a low stall you could use more midrange torque around 3500 rpm. I think a 220/220 112 +2 or a 224/224 113 +4 would be better matched to your set-up.

Well I am looking to change the TC as well. Maybe not at the same time? But within the year. I was looking at a Yank TP 4500 or somewheres about? And 3.73 or 4.10 gears? Any ideas? I am looking for a KILLE N/A street car that can do the stop light scene But can hold its own on when I need to go to cecil or Maple Grove both about 1hr away!!! The cam will be part of a ARE S2 H/C/I,pulley combo. Just dont have the 4k or so in one chunk.
Looking for somewhere around 425hp with current mods and those mentioned

bob

Any opinions?

bob

I ran the 226/234 112LSA .554/.575 cam in my m6 c5 with ARE Stage II heads for over a year. It made 417rwhp two years back through LS1 castings and full exhaust. I really loved the lopey sound of this cam, and with proper tuning and throttlebody setup, it idled and drove perfectly.

However, with the new lobes out there, this cam profile has sort of become out of date in my opinion.. You can now get a lot more lift with the same duration and keep the ramps very street drivable.

I think ARE's newer S2 heads do not need that much extra exhaust. I'd look at 228/228 113 or 228/232 114.

My buddy has that cam in his 01 T/A with ARE heads, Mac headers, with 18x11's and the car made 419.4 RWHP and 380 something on torque through a 9" with 4.10's.... The set up lasted a month in my buddys car before a bunch of valves got in a fight with some pistons but on a 100 shot the car went 103 in the 1/8 and it weighed in at almost 3900 w/driver damn convertables it is back together now with some good JE pistons with valve relief's. No new numbers yet but the car hauls some ***

3 of us in Orlando have used this cam. 2 on a 114 and 1 on a 112. The cam will make the top end power no doubt but taking into account the newer lobes available these days I would not use this cam unless your car was going to see alot of nitrous use. All 3 cars ran ARE S2 heads and ran 11.5s N/A. I also ran a 150 shot and went 10.69@129 on a 1.58 60'. The new cams will make similar top end power, offer more midrange, and have better idle and driveability characteristics.

There are newer lobes available now. We can get just as much power with better driveability.

I would look at a 228/228 XE-R based cam on 114 LSA and 2 degrees advance ground in with ARE's newest S2 heads
Cheers,
Chris

ps- I am running a 230/230 XER on 112LSA with no advance and peak at 6300rpm with my S1 5.3L ARE heads.

I have this cam and idle set to 1k in an M6. Not all that lopey in my opinion, havent had any streetability problems at all.

However, I do feel the cam is a bit peaky -- lots of power up top but could be stronger in the mid rpm range.
