well, its not hard. but there's some important steps in there if you want to ensure a good reliable/accurate job.

anyone with some time and patience can do this. its just very time consuming. esp. the first time through it.

I used masking tape cause i had it handy, but I think either automotive grade masking tape (3m is green) or duct tape would be better. I used the blue tape that is low tack used for household painting, but in retrospect, I did have to spend a little extra time pulling little pieces of tape off the deck surface that I wouldnt have had to do if I used duct tape. since its much stronger. and its stickier, so it would hold a better seal around the edges of the pistons, and not let metal bits get at the rings. obvously what ever tape you use, you'll have to clean the deck surface really good and remove any oil or coolant so it will stick with parts cleaner. same for the piston dome. I found using a razor blade, held at 90deg. angle to the piston, would scrape almost all the carbon off the piston. then I used towels and carb cleaner/or parts cleaner for the rest. goin to add this to the sticky too.

I took apart the lifter hyd. and filled it with epoxy. then had to reassemble really quick so it didnt setup before I put it back together. there's a little spring inside there that will push the plunger up against the bottom of the clip. just mix less hardner so it will setup slower. it ony took a small dab insideit. I actually had a whole set of lifters, so I made them all. selling them if your interested. if you do weld, just make sure not to get any fill where the pushrod sits in the plunger. you want to duplicate the pushrod sitting in the plunger exactly the same. only W/O the preload.
