Default Should I install my TR224 or go custom?

I bought a TR224 cam on here used and planned on only doing a cam swap, but a friend of mine has a set of CNC ported 241 heads that have only seen track use (under 250 miles, albeit hard ones) for only $600. They're proven heads as well, as he has run 11.17@120 with a 228 cam in an auto. Since I have the heads off, I could easily swap the lifters out which was why I went with the TR224 in the first place - not having to swap out my lifters since it was such a mild cam. I don't really plan on going bigger on the cam, maybe just use Comp XFI or LSK lobes and actually go a little smaller on duration - 220/224 probably. I'd like some opinions on what direction I should go in. Will I be happy with the TR224? It's on a 112+4 LSA which will give it a nice lope and good midrange torque, but I have never driven a cammed LS1 ever, so I have no idea if I'll like it. I know it's the most popular cam out there, but I'm always one to try new ideas if they'll work well. What do you all think?

I would just keep the tr224. You have it already, and it is one of the most proven cams out there.

I'm running the TR224 112. I just got it in and I can tell you this much already.... I want bigger. Its sooooooo mild you really need to listen at idle to be able to tell theres a cam in there. If I was starting over especially with those heads of yours I would step into a 228-230. Mind you its never enough and I cant complain about this cams lack of power its just so mild mannered I can handle more erratic behavior if there is more power to be had

keep it and use it. If it is a DD then definatly keep it as you will have good power under the curve. You may not make a lot of peak power but it will be there when you need it. You can get a set of used ls6 heads for 600 off of here almost any day.

I think I'll keep it and try it, and I already have the CNC ported 241's - I don't think LS6's would gain me much really.

You won't be sorry. With a good set of of small port high velocity heads, good DCR and the TR224 it's a setup hard to beat in all around power. The lowend and midrange it produces is great and pulls decent up top also.

Comparing engine dyno numbers on GenIII motors that have ported heads, the gains from a 224/224 sized cam to a much larger cam are small. We're talking around 2hp per degree of increased intake duration. Reading such results makes it hard to justify the necessary compromises of a big cam.

Since you already have the 224 just install that one. No point in going smaller; bigger maybe but you already said you didnt want to do that. Sure you will be happy with the 224. If any thing you will probly wana go biggre after a while I did. had a 228r thistime went with a 228-232

Keep the TR224. It's a great cam and you already have it.
