Default What the heck happened...i checked my oil.

I was leaving late at night to run up to sonic to get a damn oreo blast

been in the car all day, no problems what soever with a 300+ mile trip under the belt.

jump in for a 5 min jaunt crank her up and head down the road and the "low oil" light comes on...so I say to myself i'll check it when i get to sonic, and I did.

and when I pulled the dipstick out of the tube, the whole ******* thing came out! the dipstick tube and the dipstick...it was really dark and I couldnt see and didnt have a flashlight

so what the heck did I do? is there a way for oil to leak out of that hole, im thinking a definite yes, since oil goes up into the tube...I babied it home and oil pressure never dropped...so how do I fix this?

Don't sweat it, go to the dealer, buy a new bolt, wipe the dipstick tube off real good and when its light out, you will easily see where it goes. Press it in place, you will know when its seated as the bracket won't line up if its not. Put the bolt in place, tighten it down, and thats it. Then change the oil, and you're good to go.

Yeah you should be fine. FWI, if you low oil light comes on, your down 2 quarts of oil i believe. So you might want to think about getting a new PCV valve while your at the dealer-its only like $5, and is probably the reason your burning oil

Or you can just install a catch-can.

BTW for future reference, when the low oil light comes on get it stopped and get at least a quart of oil in it immediately. Even if the light were to malfunction, you would rather be quart over for a few miles than two or more quarts low.

you're not serious are you? putting a dipstick back in takes like 2 seconds bolt will take 2 more. when you get it in the hole make sure you push hard enough to seat it all the way then bolt it down.

Be very careful about driving with low oil. If you seize that engine, you need to do a full rebuild. Although it'd be a good excuse to finally get that 454 LSX.

I know a guy who had a 77 Cutlass 350 (which he was clocked doing 162mph in) and six months after he sold it, he got a call from the new owner. It had lost oil pressure half way home and the motor seized. The worst part is that there was 10 grand dumped into this motor (that's a lot for the 80's).

Be careful putting that tube back in. I have read on the header change section people removed the dipstick tube to change the headers, the end of the dipstick touched the starter motor which blew the end off the dipstick.

To make it an easier job have a friend guide the dipstick tube from above while your guiding from under the car with a flashlight. That way you can confirm it's fully seated. I take it someone forgot to reinstall the 15mm bolt and bracket?

On my 99 SS the dipstick tube was bolted to the head with a 15 mm bolt. On my 99 C5 the dipstick tube was bolted to the exhaust manifold with a 10 mm bolt. That damn bolt broke off in my Kooks headers, and now I need to figure out what to do.

He means 15mm wrench. It can be a pain in the *** to find the hole (no comment), but its an easy process overall.
