First cam.... am I going to big? opinions please...
I've been reading alot in this section trying to learn about cams. I don't know much about them really. I got a really cheap deal on an MTI Z1 cam from a friend. This is going to be my first cam ever. I'm getting close to putting it in but now I'm kinda getting cold feet on if it's going too be to big. It's 236/236 .585 .585 112 LSA. It's not going to be a DD. Mostly weekends just for fun and not much track time. Has anyone used this cam before? What did you like or dislike about it? What kind of numbers do you think I'll be at? I will be getting LT's, and a LS6 intake to go with it. Any opinions or comments would be great. Oh and will my PTV clearance be ok?
Also this will be my first time doing a cam swap. I have a friend that has done a couple and is going to help me but do I need to get anything else? I've got springs, locks, TI retainers, 7.4 hardened pushrods, LS2 timing chain, and a LS6 oil pump. Is there anything I'm missing or should put in while the car is down? Again any advice would be great!!!

It would like a bit more cubes, this is like a small stroker cam nowadays.
Properly tuned it should work, but it will be a bit sluggish in the lower rpms. It also needs very efficient exhaust so LTs and duals would be best.
This looks like a Lunati grind.

It's a hair smaller than the MS4 (239/242 .651") that I have in my '00 WS6. The only other things I've done are Kooks 1-3/4 headers, catted-y, GMMG exhaust. It's a very good driver. My tuner sucks and can't get the surge out under 2k rpms but I know others have done it so you should be able to get a very smooth tune out of yours.
While you're down there with the cam, you may as well put an underdrive pulley on instead of putting the stocker back. I just ordered a powerbond pulley with belts for a couple hundred bucks from texas-speed.

if this is for an M6 car....i doubt your clutch will hold the power.
and if it's an auto....the stall and gears will make it sluggish unless you upgrade.

It is TAPPET LIFT that is a factor.

a 236/236 cam is not big at all. I drove a similar cam to NC from NJ and back getting over 25mpg in a 6spd with 4.11's
as long as it is properly tuned you should be fine!

teke184 --- I do have a M6 and I have a spec stage 4 clutch in there with about 10k miles on it. think that will hold it for awhile?
Superjoe --- thanks I never thought about an underdive pully. I think I'll get one now,
Predator-Z --- how sluggish are we talking at low rpms here? like stock power till I get past 3k or something? and Will a good set of heads help bring it to life? What kind and size should I be looking at? And what is TAPPET LIFT? am I going to be ok with stock heads still? Sorry I have so many questions.......
Thanks to everyones help on here. Love the feedback keep it coming....
