Default PLEASE HELP! Broke a bolt off in the end of my crank!

I was putting an underdrive pulley on my crank today, and I was using a long bolt to pull it on. The pulley started going on, and I was putting some serious pressure on this thing, trying to get it to seat. Then all of a sudden the long bolt snapped down by the threated area... and I'm fucked. Can anyone tell me how to get this bolt out?

hmmm you are going to have to drill it out....
that is all I can think of....

again, this is why YOU DO NOT PULL A PULLEY ON WITH A LONGER BOLT!

You have to do it right with a threaded rod, and a washer/nut combo..

I wish you the best of luck my friend...

You might get lucky enough to back the bolt out with a left handed drill bit,
but you will probably need an easy out after you drill it.
I hope that you had plenty of lube on the bolt threads so it will come out easier.
Make sure to drill the hole dead center and parallel to the crank to avoid drilling
into the crank's threads.
May the force be with you...

I would suggest that you have a pro do it. If not, here's the situation. It would be lovely to drill a small hole and tap it with a reverse thread and put a screw in it to twist it back out.

Problems: need small reverse tapper with a 3 in length and matching screw (hard way to do it).

If you drill two holes next to each other and connect them to make a slot. Then just back it out with a flat head screw driver.

There's countless threads where people have this problem. It can be fixed. You should try to learn from other peoples mistakes though.

There seems to be alot of broken bolt threads right now. I feel for you. I broke a cam retainer plate bolt off in the block last week then while drilling it out I cleverly bent the drill bit and broke it off in the hole. Not nearly as sucky as your situation though.
Good Luck!

The easyout is hardened and can not easily be drilled out... This may require professional help. When I seized my buddies crank bolt, we did not use an easy out for just this reason. We wound up drilling it out and installing a helicoil.

I took the whole engine to a machine shop this morning, they are going to use an EDM to get the bolt out.

Those helicoils are a friggin blessing. It worked well for me on my lifter tray bolt. Thanks again for suggesting that!
