Should I change out my lifters
While i have my heads off, should I change out my lifters? My car only has 14,900 miles on it. If it makes any differance, in running a .602 lift cam, along with my new heads. IS there any strenght to be gained here, and or performance? Or shoul I just keep my stockers? Thanks

Re: Should I change out my lifters
Yeah, I'd pick up a set of those comp r's.. they handle the stronger springs needed for high lift and high rpms. Also, the manufacturer of those for comp just came back on line (they were out of business for a year or so), and they may not stay in business. I'd pick some up while you can. I plan to. One of the sponsors was selling them for $195 shipped.

I have heard that those Comp R lifters need less preload than the stock lifters. You may need to put .020" shims under your rockers to decrease the preload.
I would check with the manufacturer for sure.
Ron,

Yes.. if you can use stock lifters if you need to. Where you'll see problems is higher rpm lifter pump up.. I'd say past 6500 (and up) is where the comp r lifters will maintain the cam lobe profile better than stock.. Now would definitely be the time to do it though

needmoremoney ....
I don't understand why you thought you even needed new lifters in the first place.
It's not going to hurt staying with stock lifters. You are getting yourself all worked up over nothing. All I said was [IF] you install Comp Rs, they are going to need a little less preload than the stockers.

"TIN" I going today find those lifters (COMP "R") I'll probally end up calling you again to understand more about this preload thing, and shimming the rockers.

Re: Should I change out my lifters
can you replace the lifters with the heads on the car or do they need to be removed? My car has 85k on it, and im going to a cam around the size that needmoremoney is going to, so im going to replace the lifters as well...

For what its worth, I removed my stock lifters with 67k miles on them. Other than the rollers looking a little more shiny in the middle than at the edges, they looked perfect. I still ended up changing them for new Crane lifters, but Im sure I probably could have stuck with the stockers and been fine.

Re: Should I change out my lifters
Yes you can remove the lifters with the heads on the car.
First, you just pull the cam, remove the rockers and push the lifter down with the pushrod. The lifters will gently fall into the oil pan where you can easily retreive them.
The only problem with this method is that the heads need to be removed to install the new lifters.
...most people doing a cam job leave the old lifters in place (they are held up when the cam is out with a plastic finger jig that is standard on Gen 3 motors). Since sometimes the plastic fingers don't work, the standard procedure is to use pen magnets to hold up the lifters in place while the cam is out (heads are on car).

Re: Should I change out my lifters
Actually, I'm going with a similar set up; sdpc ls6 ported CNC heads, hardened pushrods, Lunati REV dual valve springs, yella terra rockers, Copma custom cam, double roller chain, oil pump...
...I'm debating myself on the lifters. I thought most people used the stock ones over, so I am surprised by the overwhelming response here to go for the "R" type replacements...
I'll probably do the same, but I am also running out of $..(UHG) ...misery loves company!
