98 z cracked block replace with 6.0?
I have a stock 98 LS1 6 speed that has a cracked block, I could not find a short block so a friend of mine found a cast iron short block6.0 based on the ls2 I think came out of a cad. escalade block has less thin 48000 miles I would like to put that in my car. My mechanic said that it would work with a little mods. The original owner gave me a hot cam when I bought the car, it’s a lunati cam with a 565 lilt. My mechanic has a machine shop and would do all the work, stud the mains and put new springs and a good head job on my stock heads and put it in my car for 1000.00 would this be a good combo and would it give me additional horse power ?. The second choice is the same as above but with L92 heads and a L76 intake for a additional 1500 ? But I would like more feed back on the first choice. Thanks Mike

LS2 is Aluminum not iron. Also no need to touch the mains.
Buy a 347 shortblock forged for now and add mods as money becomes available.
You can find a forged block for $2800 or less. Shop around.

IF YOU'RE GOING L92/L76, THEN I SAY LITTLE BIGGER CAM, ATLEAST. i KNOW YOURS WILL make good power, but you could benefit with those heads and a few more cubes than the 346 by using a bigger cam.

with full bolt-ons and a good tune I would say 430+ rwhp......the new LS3 vettes with just an air filter and longtubes on the stock tune made 423 rwhp....they all use the L92 heads and L76 intake but have a little bit of extra displacement at 6.2L's.....make sure you at least upgrade the clutch and prob have the tranny rebuilt also.....and hard launches will be out of the question if you still have the stock 10-bolt junk

Good choice with the Iron 6.0, and the L76/L92 setup, I would definately go with a bigger Cam though. Look at the flow numbers on those Heads, you will see why.
I am doin the same setup, except with a 6.6l 402ci bottom end, and this is the Cam I am putting in: 243/247, .621 XFI/.612 X-ER, 114+3LSA
That was recommended to me with my setup, I am going to be around 10.8:1 Comp. With all the supporting mods(Intake/Exhaust..etc), I am hoping for around 480rwhp numbers..

It has nothing to do with bigger. It has to be a cam designed with the proper valve events and duration splits for the L92 heads.
Too many poeple here shooting advice without knowing the parameters of the combo.
The 221/221 will work poorly with L92 heads.
You said 6.0 iron block, is it LQ9 or LQ4? one has flat top pistons and the other dished.
In a nutshell, you can use that cam 221/221 in the 6.0 with freshened stock heads, not optimum but you said "budget".
Any other than your perimeter bolt heads and you have to consider coil bracket and other valve covers.
Patriot offers ported perimeter heads for less than $1000 with gaskets I believe, this might be the right choice $$ wise for you.
To recap;
6.0 shortblock (LQ9 or LQ4?)> Free
PP heads > $1000
Cam> 221/221 lunati> Free
Now all you need is the gaskets, fluids, new replacement oil pump and LS2 chain/sprocket kit.
Put it all together for a decent torq/Hp output.
The biggest issue is the intake, you should try to find either used LS6 or LS2 intake and TB.

Good advice from all, now I need to decide what I want to do with the car .money or keep it simple these cars or so easy to make power its hard to believe on my 81z I had to take out a loan just to do the upgrades to get 450 to 475 horse (dyno @ the wheel 355) here’s some pics and what I had to do to get that horse power. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/774485
