Default 317 heads and camshaft

i was searching this site and noticed the 6.0l 317 heads flow pretty good compared to the ls1 heads. i just dont want to put to big of cam in lq4. i used a virtual engine calculator. and ran the flow numbers and it said i could atleast get 410hp out of these heads. since these 72cc heads. should i have them shaved port and polished them? i am trying to get the most out them. any suggestions would be helpful. thanks in advance.

I would not use them unless you are running a lot of boost, or a lot cubic inches. You would be better off with some LS6 heads.

n/a is what i want to do now. but i am thinking of putting a turbo on it at a later date. but i want the most out of it until then. it will see some highway driving. but i am shooting for atleast 20mpg. with 4l60e trans and 4.10 gears. is this possilbe? if it is a suggestion on a cam would help a lot too.

The 317 heads are a bad choice for an NA application. If you mill them to optimize them now, they'll be less than ideal for your turbo later on. You'd be better off just buying a head with smaller combustion chambers now and picking up a set of 317's later on if you end up with a turbo.

are the 317 heads just not that good. should i get a set of 5.3 heads? if so which ones should i get? i have a set of dart pro 1 heads 215 cc 64cc setup for roller cam for a old style 350 that i am trying sell. never been used. just cant seem to move out from under my bed. if i can sell them i can get a decent set of heads. but until then i will have to get something as cheap as i can get.

The 317's are a 72cc chamber ideal for blower applications, they would just be dogs on a small NA motor. A nice set of 5.3's would be a much better choice.

You need to make a decision now about the boost. If yes, then set it up for that and make the best out of it. otherwise you'll end up paying twice.

I'm in the process of getting a set of 317s hand ported for my P1SC application on my 370. With my custom cam 210/224 115+1LSA, it will make decent power untill I can get the blower before X-mas.

If you are serious about boost then pick a low duration, tight LSA cam to make the best use of the compresion you'll have. Add a blower on that later for added power, or just change cam at later date. Cams are cheaper to find than heads.

i was thinking of getting a turbo but not sure as to when i will do it. it i get decent hp/tq number and i am fine with it then i might not go with a turbo at all. if i need a set of 317 heads. i have them already on my 6.0 i got. so i could keep them for a later date right? just have them sent to shop to get them to flow better if i go turbo. i dont mind holding on to them. i have room for them. i dont want this engine to be slug off the line by putting to big of a cam in it.
