Default Thoughts on this setup?

i was just wondering what all your thoughts were on what id like to do to my car this winter. i want to go forced induction eventually but dont have the funds to go all out right now with the car payments. So i was just going to do the following to hold me over for a few years. Ok so what id like to do would be to port and polish my heads. id like to go with oversized ferra valves but not sure on how much ill have to play with yet. ls6 intake manifold, with thunder racings Trex cam. Head package with titanium retainers stronger comp cams springs and such to acomidate for the high lift cam and higher rever limiter.Roller rockers would be nice but again the money issue. Slp longtubes with catless Y-pipe through a LM1 cat back system, and the slp lid. goal would be nice to have 400 at the wheels but i was thinking prolly somwhere in the neighbor hood of 380 or so from what ive been seeing. Suggestions or comments would be great considering i have a while before the build. thanks alot

couple things that jump out..

Trex cam probably won't allow bigger valves
Trex cam alone will get you 400rwhp
heads would possibly get 20-40hp on top of that
SLP long tubes are the WORST for ground clearance
LM1 is going to be horribly loud and raspy with that cam
higher ratio rockers don't work with most cams (particularly the Trex)
stock rockers work anyway

I would get a smaller cam probably around a 228 cam and port the heads. With that alone you should easily be over 400 at the ground considering your a 6 speed.

Yea i was goign to try a borla in place of the lm1 resonator i heard it tones it down a bit and gets rid of alot fo the rasp. I guess ill just have to find out.Its good to knwo the stock rockers will be fine, and i do remember reading that that cam wont alow bigger valves but if i can hit at least that 400 hp mark with stock valve sizes that would suit me just fine. More hp is always welcome though lol. Im putting 4:11s in the rear also. I was also wondeirng are the QTP headers as good as they say because there about the same price as slps and they probably have better ground clearance? All my buddies think the Trex is too agressive but im the crazy one of the group i fell in love with the sound and it has deffinately proven itself at the track. ill be quite excited next year to see what i run. The best ive ran this year was 13.1 at 107 and the 60 ft was i think around a 2.1 or 2.0. First thing is a real set of tires though. I still am rocking the 235 mastercrafts that came with the car lol, its like driving with plastic tires lol. I was jsut goign to go with a set of G force sprt 225 in teh front and bfg drag radial out back as big as i can fit. not sure waht wheels to go with i was thinking torque thrusts or stock 35th anniversarry wheels.

I hear good things about the qtp headers. I would steer away from the slps because of the ground clearance issue.

a strong cam only setup would get you 400 rw. something like a 232/236 on a 110 +2 with all the supporting mods.i use the qtp 1 3/4 headers on my 408,they are pretty good headers.

Another member jumping on a big cam for no apparent reason....TREX?!? Unless you plan on reving to 7000, I wouldn't go there.
You sound like the type that would like something a bit smaller.

Some will say a 224 for a first cam...I think that is a bit small personally.

You could also go with a 228/232, and select your LSA depending on what you use the car for...You will have much more midrange, and much more "power under the curve". Those specs are really good with stock cubes IMO.

I know from first hand experience that a big cam isn't always the best...I have an MS3 currently...great cam- for the track, or a bigger cubed motor...a bit too much IMO for a 346 to be practical on the street! It is a DOG below 3k, and I have 4.10 gears.

I am swapping to a 228/232 112 +4 with a shot...cannot wait to feel torque again.

Your stock rockers will be fine, especially if you are on a budget. Since you are a six speed, I would recommend some steeper gears (3.73/4.10), that alone will get that car moving very nicely

I think that with a decent sized cam, and the ls6 manifold, with other bolt ons, you will crack 400 RWHP...We just installed a 225/225 cam only into a customers 2000 T/A. He only has a lid, and LT's/cutouts and untuned he made 370 wheel....with a tune, I think he could get maybe 15 more out of his set up. That's also with the crappy LS1 manifold...he could have 400 wheel with the ls6 manifold and a tune, and some other bolt ons easily...

You should get there easily!

Good luck my man
Erik

I love the Trex cam and will be installing it im my car. The only huge worry i have is the amount of Rpms you have to turn to get maximum efficiency out of the cam. As you all may already know the Trex cam is rated to 6800 rpm. Now i know a forged enigne would be the best way for this but i cant afford to forge out my bottom end this winter. Is there any semi safe way to do this or is this completely dumb to do. I was going to replace the rod and main bolts with Arp hardware hopeing that would help. Just wondering what you guys rev yours too and what your thoughts are.Oh and the car has just a touch over 58 thousand miles on it, previouse owner babbied the thing as i still do only now it sees track time. thanks

I spun my 346 to 6700 rpms when it had heads and a baby cam.

I have had no problems with my car at all. The only reason the 346 is out is because one of the head bolt holes is stripped out.
