Ported ls1 or stock ls6 heads?
Looking at doing a stock rebuild and wanted to change heads while I had it out. The main motor work right now is a hammer cam, and all boltons minus a ls6 intake. So would a ported set of ls1 heads be better (flow better) than a stock set of ls6 heads? I can get both for the same ammount is why I am asking.

Re: Ported ls1 or stock ls6 heads?
This was the route I was going with. I was planning on running stock LS6 heads with my F1 cam just to see what it would do. However I ended up buying stock heads and having them "velocity" ported to pick up a few extra ponies. I should have some numbers in a week or two - depending on when I can find time to put them on. I say try the LS6 heads though. Plus, you then have good cores for when you go big cube.ha

Re: Ported ls1 or stock ls6 heads?
From the article a year or so ago in GMHTP, the LS6 heads flow only 20 cfm less than ported ls1 heads, and they have a little smaller comb. chamber, so this was my reasoning for them over some CNC heads. You are right, I will also have them for a big cube motor down the road or for putting boost to it.

If you can get either head for the same price, the LS6's are the way I'd go but...port them as well! Then, you're really set to haul some serious ***. LS6 heads all the way.
If the cost wasn't a factor, I'd tell you to go with ported LS1 heads. For most street/average strip setups, they can't be beat.

I would recommed the LS6 heads. That way if you wanted more later... it is there on your motor just waiting for you to mod it.
Heck spend an afternoon and clean up your new LS6 heads. ....Just an thought.
Unshoud the valves, clean up around where the push rod goes through the port...etc.

hehe, exaclty what i was looking into, and as for the 01 z06 go see what a 02-03 z06 pulls, if you want to compare dynoes. They run alot more aggerssive cam, to make due with the high lift cfm potential of the ls6 heads. I have seen an 02 z06 pull 390 with stock cam and heads, and pretty much all bolt ons (random tech cats, xpipe, borla stinger, tpi lt's, volant intake, s2 TB, and a higher flowing bridge,i think pullie). I have heard that the difference between the 02's and 01's (by owners) is night and day. 02's Pull much harder up top.
I will be going with a set of ls6 heads when i put in my cam, along with some 918's, and hopefully some light weight valves, i figured the stock sized valves is good enough. If i'm changing the cam, springs and so on, i might as well get some heads for later. Will probably be around 1200, but with no core, so you can always sell your stock ones, or do a little port practice.

I did 390.1 with a bone stock 02 LS6 with SLP LTs, lid and cutout in an fbody... the LS6 is twice the engine the LS1 is... ported LS1s vs LS6 I have no idea though.
