Most cams 224 and smaller sounds like what your looking for.

I had ran a 221/221 in my car for a while and loved it. It had plenty of lope to it, but nothing crazy. Put 399 to the ground and had no drivability issues. It was also one of the lower lift cams (.558) and valve springs would last forever. Plus I didnt have to rev the **** out of it to make power.

Its forsale BTW

25rwhp is about what you will see on a small cam swap. I ran a 218/222 in my last car and would have gone bigger if I had to do it all over again.

It was a 221/221 .558/.558 112+4

I would say I gained around 50ish from it. My final numbers were 399.5/394.8

I have the cam and a set of NIB springs for sale.

i'm thinking i'm gonna go with the TR224 114 lsa when I get ready for mine... I don't want anything huge, it's a DD, and i'd like a little bit of lope to it, but nothing crazy...

what kinda HP is usually seen out of a TR224?

i honestly, like the patriot 226/226 cam!! its gotten nothing but good feedback!! plus i hear from the 226 users, that the cam sounds bigger than it actually is..so thats pretty cool. i think the specs are 226/226 585/585 112. so youll definitely have a nice little lumpy sound man!!

I would say you will put down betwene 375-400. One of the reasons mine made as much is it did was becuase I had an AL flywheel and stock wheels.

Ill PM you the info on the cam.

Thats what it sounded like in my car with the 900rpm idle (higer because of lighter flywheel) you should be able to get it down to 700 easily.

haha so what would you classify those 260/270 cams as... insane?

also, i hear the GM Hotcam kit is a nice cam to learn off of. 218/227 112 something close to that.

i just put the TR224 112 in my car. with the stock tune and idle speed, it would definatly lope. we set the idle speed to 700 and it has just a very slight lope now. my car could handle even 600 or 650 on the idle speed but you could almost tell id didn't want to be there. i almost wish we would have went between 675 and 700. also, i am on the stock convertor. i was told to not go larger than this cam with the stock one. come to find out, i have way more low end power than with the stock setup even with this convertor. however, i put on a ported throttle body, LS6 intake, TSP 5.3L heads, and this cam. i am not sure what gave me more power down low but i have it. i wouldn't necessarily say it has more at low rpms. getting out of the hole with street tires is much harder now as it wants to spin through the whole first gear where before these mods i could hook in first fairly decent.

well i can't compare this setup to any other because this is the only one i have tried. plus, i don't have any dyno numbers either. i paid $1100 for the heads i think. i have the TSP 5.3L 2.5 heads. i have the 918 springs (instead of the dual springs) so that is why my price is $100 cheaper than whats on their website. the cam i bought from thunder racing of course. originally it is $389 if i remember correctly. i happened to wait for their freaky friday special to get a discount. my receipt shows $1471.45 shipped for the heads, TSP hardened pushrods, ARP head bolts, GM MLS head gaskets, timing chain cover gasket, and water pump gasket. i paid $426.63 shipped for the cam and poly motor mounts from thunder racing. i spent around $110 for LS7 lifters from Scroggin dickey. i think that about covers it. well for me, there was more. since i have a 2000, i went an bought a LS6 intake and the 01-02 injectors. then i bought new intake gaskets, pcv valve, exhaust clamps, etc. i reused the valve cover gaket and metal header gasket.

small - 224/224
medium - 228/228 (or 228/232)
large - 232/234

those 3 are basicaly the same cam. The 232 will give a little more top end but thats it. Those arent small medium and large they're all about the same

234-
larger - 236/242
giant - 244/248

The same with the 244 being ovbiously the most peak hp

The differences in those cam will be the amount of tq they produce but to classify them as big medium and small is incorrect.

220 -221 is small 224-232 medium and 234-244 is large

I went from a tr224/224 to 234/240 to a 238/240

The tr224 is the quintisential off the shelf street cam for an ls1

I just wanted to give the guy somewhere to start based off of power numbers alone. This subject has been covered many times (almost daily).
