Question What's the difference between...

A 2004 block out of a yukon and a 2002 camaro SS stock ls1 block? I've been told that the only difference is intake and heads (along with other monir details)

In other words, I'm looking at getting this for around $400!!! I would like to put my STOCK heads from my 5.7L LS1 on it along with my voodoo cam (specs in sig), my stock LS6 intake, and my pacesetter LT's.

Is this possible? If not, please explain what would have to be done to make it possible!

Thanks guys!!!

Josh

The block in the Yukon is also iron, where the LS1 in your camaro is aluminum. Is this a 5.3L or 6.0L engine? I'm not too familiar with the Yukon powerplants.

Yes the 04 yukon engine is a 5.3L engine.

So is the only big difference the metal? I wonder what the weight difference will be?

If it's the 5.3L, what other reason do you have for using the shortblock (assuming you're not going to stroke it)? Is your block trashed?

I won't know the answer to that until tomorrow evening, as I'll be pulling the block. I had a SHITLOAD of coolant come out before the oil did when I pulled the drain plug on my oil pan. I'm afraid of a crack in the block.

You can put the 5.3 in your car, but it will be a significant downgrade. Your going from 5.7 liters to 5.3, which will reduce horsepower and more importantly torque. Also a the cam will reduce the bottom end more with the smaller motor. It will have the same affect as putting a larger cam in the 5.7, less bottom end w/ a higher peak. If the heads you are using have more than a 62cc chamber you will also be reducing the compression of the 5.3L, again reducing power output(the 5.3 already has less compression than an LS1). You can have the 5.3 bored out and put the LS1 pistons in it, but the expense of having this done will put the total cost of the engine over what you would pay for a used 6.0 or 5.7 shortblock.

I would look into fixing your engine first, as it may just be a blown head gasket. If you find otherwise and must replace the engine and can only afford the 5.3, leave the heads on it unless you have ported and milled heads to replace them with.

So this block is NOT identical to an LS1. The pistons are different? I was told the 5.3 was an LS6 block with smaller heads and a different intake, and made of cast iron.

Is this wrong?

Moreover, I was told it was the HEADS that make it a 5.7L or a 5.3L because of the chamber size difference in the two heads. Is this also wrong?

yes, thats completely wrong. the 5.3 is closer to a ls1. it weighs more and is smaller. the only thing good about a 5.3 is the heads, if you put them on anls1 it can bump your compression. the bore is what makes an engine a 5.3, 4.8, 6.0, or 5.7. you can buy a 5.3 for cheap as hell.
