Trickflow Heads & Small to Medium Cams
I've been wanting to get a set of heads for my car and I've been leaning towards the Trickflow's but all the searching I've done I can't seem to find much information on anything but the larger cams. That and 402's and 383's and such. I've got a 228/232 588 595 on a 110+1 lsa and really wanting to hit around 450 rwhp with some really good torque numbers. Just curious if any of you have heard any numbers or results from anybody with a small to med cam. I would probably get the work done by Vengeance, but before I drop the kind of cash this would be I'd like to hear from somebody that's got a cam close to the size of mine with the TF's. Anybody wanting to guess hp and tq feel free to do so. Mods are in my sig, only other thing that would be added would probably an ud pulley. Thanks

Brian tooley posted up in the dyno section results from testing with 3 different TFS cams. All were medium to small, and I think their stage 3 cam is similar to the cam you have now just on a 112. Im sure if you search under his name youll find what im talking about.

Thanks, I found the thread you were talking about. Although the figures were at the crank it looked to be around 450 on hp and 400 on tq. The hp figures looked good but I was hoping to see a little higher tq as this is only about 18 more than I have how. I also think they had a fast 90. Thanks for the info.

You may be looking at the wrong thread!?The stage 3 trickflow cam made 540hp and 475ft lbs at the flywheel with the 215 head unmilled and the out of the box fast 90. The same combo with the LS-6 made 515hp and 465ft lbs. Their cam is 228-230 on a 112. The stage 2 (220-224 -112) cam made 523hp and 476ft with the fast and makes about 10 more ft lbs everywhere from 3000-4500 then the torque is identical for both cams up until about 5500 where the stage 3 starts to extend the rpm's and the stage 2 starts dropping off @6k. It made 498hp and 462 tq with the ls-6. I think with a little milling and the addition of the heads with your current mods you will see power well into the mid 400's on both hp and torque. Definitely more than 18 ft lb's!
The way I put it down was a little confusing. The figures I gave were after the 15% driveline loss. I would be happy with mine if both figures were in the mids 400's.

Id consider the cam in my car MED sized by todays specs. 23x/24x 113
These heads and the custom vette doctor cam made awesome power and drivabality is great. Daily driven. Really comes on 3500+ but doesnt feel weak ever even down low.

I know my cam isnt small but
BIG cams...
Trex, g5x4, magic stick 4 (big lsk lift)
Guys are putting in 24x/24x even bigger, at huge lift.

Today's aftermarket, high-dollar cylinder heads were designed for MAXIMUM potential; if not, said companies would go out of business
With the tuning abilities available today, one can achieve 95% STOCK driveability on a 346 with a 239/242 camshaft; I should know
Going with a "baby" cam is just wasting the set-up potential and will yield disappointing results when compared to the "medium" to "extra-largish" camshafts
Get a medium to large with a good tune and be happy.

That thread is exactly my point.
I made 430 rwhp using a Thunder 224/224 cam 5 years ago with all the bolt-ons and 5 year-old technology.
With the $ invested in the thread link, the return on that "small" Vengeance set-up is a waste IMO.
I would expect Ron's Heads to produce the decent torque graph on that baby cam.
With a "larger" Vengeance, or other comparable cam, on that SAME set-up you'd be looking at ~35 more lb./ft. and over +50 more rwhp
I'd take the extra power for the same $ spent myself

Your looking to get 70rwhp out of heads? Not going to happen. You can expect around 40rwhp with the heads. Should put you right around 426rwhp/ ~410rwtq.
With a TR224 and AFR heads I made 425rwhp/403rwtq. I need a Mamo ported FAST 90/90 set up and EWP. Could hit 450rwhp.

Look for an older Tony Mamo thread on his original 224/228 114+1 XE-R cam in a 205 AFR headed setup.
Can you say 475rwhp ???
Big cams in a 346 that is not a pure race setup is just ego stroke. The trick is to maximize the overall combo and not just band aid it with a big cam.
Some poeple will say, it pulls like a train above 3500, my 224/222 does that too, all the way to 7000.
The majic word is COMBO and there are small cam combos and big cam combos. most big cam combos around are mismatched.
Neither the head, nor intake, nor air induction/MAF setup is maximized for those cams.

I am using the trick flow stage 3 cam and I just put down 445rwhp and 421rwtq, by my standards I dont condsider the trick flow cam to be a BIG cam I think its rather small considering what else is offered for a stock motor.
